Hi folks, my kids are badgering me to set up a minecraft server at home for them both are avid players.

first up what sort of spec would I be needing to host a decent server for them and some friends, no idea whats the max no of players in a server?

and secondly how easy is this to do securely?

any advice greatfully appreciated

you can run a minecraft server for a few people with any relatively modern desktop.

An old Core 2 Quad would be fine for a small server for your kids and a few of their friends.

The max number of players is determined by your hardware spec. Want more players, you need more RAM. Pile as much of the stuff in the server as you can.

As for resources, there are tons and tons of resouces on how to set up a minecraft server

Download from here

Here is a good place to start

Top results in google and first two articles I read.

afaik there's no upper limit bar the power of the server/stability of java to the size of a minecraft server.

for just local games you can open to lan in-game and that would do the trick, if its internet it gets more tricky with static ip on the server, portforwarding and having to constantly check your own external ip to let folk know what it is [unless you pay for a static external ip].

in terms of running the actual server itself, with the tricky inital setup done its quite easy, you can whitelist so only certain usernames can join [ie not just randomers] and limit the number of players manually as well as load adventure maps, set op permissions etc.

first port of call is the good old google, plenty of youtube guides, wiki's and forum posts on how to get the thing setup, there's also a massive thread on here about the ocuk minecraft server and i'm sure theres plenty of folk on there who can help out too.
