Setting up a print server

I'm trying to set up a print server using a homehub and I have a few queries.

I was informed that I'll need to to give the printer a static ip address due to the lease only being around 3 days. How can I assign the printer a static ip if won't come up in the list of devices.

Another problem I'm having is setting it up on multiple computers. I got it set up fine on the first but then when I set it up in the second it wouldn't work on either. Should I disable LPR Byte Counting and give each computer a different name on the queue eg LPT1 then LPT2?

If I was to get this working, I've been told that the internal memory on the hub is awful and the largest document I could print would be 2mb. Is there anything I can do to get around this or would I have to manually hook up the printer again each time?

1. What is the make & model of the printer. and homehub.

2. You will need to set a static address, first find the ip of the printer what the dhcp server is issuing to it and then connect to it via http://[ipaddress].

3. You should not need to change any other settings to get it setup.

4. You would need to get a better print server if the largest is 2mb, but I don't know who told you that. 2MB is nothing for a document size.

Its a brother mfc 3360c and the homehub is the version 1.5 hub.

When I set it up all I did was

-Add printer
-Local printer
-create a new port: TCP/IP
-Type in the ip as 192.168.1.253 (untick 'Query the printer and automatically select the drivers to use' box
-It then runs and I had to click custom
-I Select LPR
- Select LPR Byte Counting Enabled
-Enter the Queue Name as LPT1
-Then I select the printer model

I'm trying to set this up at my cousins and in the mean time I just hooked it up to their main pc and connect via the pc rather than the hub.

I probably misheard the person about the internal memory only allowing 2mb documents.

If I changed the start address and end address of the DCHP pool so that the printer server was outside the range, would it use a static ip?

This is the first step....

If it has a network port in then you should be able to configure the device some how via the web gui or the software that come with the printer.

If the printer is assigned 192.168.1.253 just click this link http://192.168.1.253. Does it bring up a configurations page? If so assign a static IP there.

You can also set a reservation on the router side with the printer mac address so even though the printer is using dhcp it will get the same IP address all the time.

The second step

....will involve connecting to the printer via add printer wizard. PS the que name is not LPT1, that is for old type connections not IP.
