Setting up HL2DM dedicated server?

I've got bandwidth and a spare pc to experiment with but I'm unsure as to whether or not I need to be running windows server 2003 or linux server software? can I setup on a my spare pc with only xp running on it? any insights appreciated.

You can run either.

If you're doing it on windows it's as easy as loading steam, going to the Tools page of you're library and installing and launching the Source Multiplayer Dedicated Server tool. Or you can do it standalone with the link above.
