I've just set up my dad's outlook e-mail, tested the connection and it fails on sending. Here's the error:

Task 'pop.ntlworld.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC67) : ' The server responded: 421 aamtaout03-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [90.202.226.103]'

Anyone familiar with it?

You'll need to be on an Virgin Media connection to test it properly as their SMTP servers will refuse connections from non-VM addresses. A quick reverse DNS check on the IP address in the error message shows you're on Sky.

Thing is, it's on a sky broadband connection and was working fine before i installed Vista, then I had to re set it up. I put in the info that came with the original paperwork from ntl. No joy.

You can try secure password authentication and see if that makes any difference, but AFAIK VM SMTP servers don't support it and won't accept connections from non-VM addresses regardless.

If your dad's only going to be accessing his email from a Sky connection (in which case why has he got an NTL email account?) you could always relay via smtp.sky.com - though then you risk some of his mail not reaching its destination because the IP address of the originating server reverse resolves to a different domain.

should work - and as stated has worked previously - I can also verify that it works because I can send email via my VM account via my workplace.
In Windows Mail, try turning on 'Outgoing Authenticaton' for that mail account (unless you've done it already)
