Hi Guys,

I have a EVGA 680i MB and 4GB of this RAM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ady Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2N1066SR2GK) running with Vista 64.

I noticed that in bios my RAM is running at 667mhz and not the 1066mhz which it is meant to run at. So I'm not too clued up but i thought i would go into Bios and change the memory settings to 1066mhz unlinked and leave the timings at 5-5-5-15.

However, when i boot windows wont boot and i get a blue screen. When i revert back 667mhz windows boots fine.

Im a missing something, or is my RAM already running at 1066mhz?

I have a theory if my RAM is DDR2 667MHZ = 2 X 667MHZ = 1066MHZ?

I can over clock my CPU fine, but my RAM seems to be a problem, even if i set my CPU back to normal clock at 3.0ghz.

Can anybody help?
 
Hi, you might need to adjust the voltage to 2.1v - this should be printed on the side of each memory module.

The BIOS I think should display the actual speed of the RAM, as this has happened on all of my boards.

533MHZ would be the speed of of the memory - 2 x 533mhz

greetings and I hope your keeping nice and warm down there in Cornwall! :p

I'm not that familiar with the EVGA 680i or indeed any nVidia chipset used for Intel® Core™2 systems, the actual hardware is different as is the BIOS layout.

Download CPU-z and check out the two different Memory [Tabs], if you can lob up a screenshot of both tabs we get a very clear picture of how your kit is running! :cool:

When they are Reading 667mhz and were 1st installed the volts were set at 2.1. However, as I understood it, if you increase the speed the volts need increasing. It does give the coorect stock speed on the side of the ram so I set it to 1066mhz 2.1v.

I dont mean to be a pain but how do i get those screen shots. I have downloaded CPUZ?

Ok here goes.

I have taken screens shots and when i look at all the DIM slots the RAM vary in Voltages and timings. I dont know if this is normal or not? I haven't only changed the the speed and the volts. However, i am a novice and i may have altered something else by altering these variables?

As you can see slot one EPP is at 2.3v while all the rest are 2.1v.

I have no understanding of this.

I have also noticed when i have 4 of the stick in i sometimes get the blue screen. I have tested them one at a time and my system works stable. however, if i use more than 2 stick i have crashes on the boots to windows.

Maybe my RAM is not set to the right settings, this is why i cant overclock to 1066Mhz?

OK, firstly to make them appear in the text you typ "
" wihtout the speech quotes obviously, I tried doing it for you with your pics but it wont work, you could try getting yourself an account with photobucket if youre gonna be posting a few pics online, that site works well
Yeah looks like your RAM is running at 667, you could try bumping your NB voltage a little, that sometimes help stabilise RAM at higher speeds

If you look at my RAM, 1 and 2 slots have the same specs, 2 and 3 have the same specs and each other. However both pairs have different specs to each other. I think this is the issue when over clocking.

I have tried T2 and this has no effect whatsoever. I have reverted back to T2 as this is the standard setting.

Can somebody please tell me if my setting on both sets of RAM is wrong? If so how do i revert back to factory settings?
 
In BIOS set your DRAM freq to 1066 or just under depending on your FSB and dividers, set your DRAM voltage to 2.1, it should boot without problems. If it doesnt then bump your NB voltage slightly and try again. And as I said before if you go into manual timings and loosen the command rate to 2T that will also help, if still no joy then loosen your timings off to 6-6-6-18 and see if that will help it post

Thanks for all your advice, it is most helpful. I have done everything apart from the NB voltage. I guess NB means North Bridge? Where is Bios would i find this?

Yes its northbridge, not sure where in your BIOS it would be, mine is on the front page, have a look round, it should be near the rest of the voltages, I'd of thought

I suspect you hoped someone would say "yeah man just changed this one setting like so and . . . . fixed" :p

Ak, that's the learning process I guess!

Anyway I'm not gonna be much more help to you as I've no hand-on experience with your nVidia chipset, not to worry asd I think 95thrifles and setter will sort you out!

I somehow missed the part you were using four separate sticks of fast DDR2, that normally requires a few extra notches of Northbridge volts (vNB) as the Nortbridge has a lot more work to do with four sticks . . . . especially trying to get them all running at DDR2-1066 speeds! :eek:

Apart from bumping the vNB I would be tempted to divide your memory into pairs and do some testing, it may well be a combination of using four sticks + two different set of SPD timings that is causing your problems so starting again with a single pair of [same SPD] sticks could help speed the troubleshooting process! :cool:
