Just ordered a samsung 820 ssd drive.

Z77-D3H Motherboard

Few questions please

1 .I have never installed a ssd drive before is there anything special i need to do on the motherboard and will i get all the relevant cabling with the ssd drive.

2. Also i will be putting in a 1tb hdd drive I already have will there be anything specific i need to do there.

3. And finally whats the best way to setup regarding os and games and movies

1. Just install like any other SATA drive. You may have to head in to the EFI and set the controller type to AHCI but this may be default on the Z77. If you are installing Windows 7, then TRIM will be automatically enabled.

2. No you select what ever drive you want as the boot master during windows setup. What other drives you have connected is irrelevant.

3. I have my 128GB SSD split in two. Half for the OS (C:\) and the other for Games (D:\). I load steam and Origin into that partition. You have to watch how many you have installed though. All my data is pointed to the larger traditional drive (E:\). I have changed the document properties by default.

you'll probably need a sata cable, they should come with the motherboard

plug ssd into intel sata3 port, and 1tb hdd into intel sata2 port

look in the bios under perepherals or storage and set the sata ports from ide to ahci(it might be set to ahci by default) but best to check and make sure

then set the ssd as first boot device in the boot order in bios

install windows onto the ssd once complete run wei to enable trim and thats it

for programs/games installation when the program/game prompts you where to install click custom then point it to the 1tb hdd(you might need to create a folder) and it will install there and place a shortcut on your desktop

its personal choice, you can stick some games on the ssd, space will be your limiting factor though,1tb is gonna hold a lot more games ect

just put your most played/longest loading games on the ssd

raids just for two ssd's or hdd's working together to double data speeds,if in raid 0 though you risk data loss if one drive fails

thanks 2 last questions.

How do i change raid and what will be my best option

Im a geek for testing for optimal performance whats best prog to use to test ssd performance to make sure its running at optimal performance and is there any results to show what it should run at

you dont need raid, you need ahci, ahci is essential to get the best performance out of an ssd,i think on z77 gigabyte boards its enabled by default

you should download/run atto benchmark or as ssd benchmark
