A friend of mine has recently had Ntl Cable installed and wanted me to set up a wireless connection. I contacted ntl and they told me to get a None-ADSL router which i did. Still can't get a wireless connection, can only get online using the ethernet and usb from the router to his laptop. Does anyone know if the router needs to be connected to a pc and then the laptop will find the wireless connection??? I thought I could just set the router up from the laptop then unplug the usb and ethernet cables and the wireless card would pick the connection up straight away. How Wrong I Was!!!! :(

Hole in wall > NTL modem > Wireless Access Point (router) >> Laptop wireless.

Just remember to leave the router powered all the time :)

just to clarify

you will have a cable modem, with a power input, a cable input and an RJ45 and USB output. You connect the RJ45 output of the cable modem to the router. The cable modem should then show an enternet light to signify something is connected to the end of it. The router will stay on 24/7 plugged into the cable modem and the mains. Never switch the two off, so when you turn your laptop on, your internet is always there.

All you then need to do, is get your laptop to scan for available wireless networks and find yours and connect. Then read up on securing your wireless network so that any tom dick or harry off the street cant use it.

Limited Or No Connectivity

After installing the router software "Successfully"! I unplugged the ethernet & USB leads from his Laptop pressed the wireless button and still can't get connection.

I have 2 PC's and a Laptop connected with no problems in my house and have set up severel wireless networks for friends and family with adsl but this has got me beat! :(

Why are you using a USB lead?

You need as OzZie says....

Hole in wall > NTL modem > router >> Laptop
Using an Ethernet cable from modem to router and router to Laptop (Make sure they are in the correct port on the router). Then run setup and when complete and functioning, then unplug the cable from router to laptop and it should pick up wireless.

define "cant get connection"

is the network listed, do you know what name the router has assigned to your wireless network.

can you see any networks at all. Is the wireless networking switched on on the laptop (they sometimes have a switch to turn it off)

You need to unplug the power cable to the modem and put it back in after connecting it to the router - the modem only works with 1 MAC address, and before it's powered off it's looking for the PC one.
