Settings to make voices louder?

Since getting a Sky+ box I've noticed that programs, especially films seem to have the background noise and music much louder than the people talking, is there anything I can do about this either with the Sky+ box or settings on the TV?

Turn the Treble and Bass down, and the midrange up? Cant say I ever noticed that problem with Sky (Sky+, or HD). All depends how the sounds were mixed in the first place.

If your running with a digital AV amp and the digital connector, it could simply be that its not set up very well. Increasing the volume of the centre speaker should do the trick.

Doesn't seem to have an option for midrange (just TV speakers), have turned treble and bass down and will watch a film later. What about gimmicks like 3DSound, should I switch it off?

Sounds like your sky+ is trying to chuck out surround sound (ie all dialogue through the centre speaker) which you dont have. Good excuse to buy surround sound, alternatively check yout sky box settings and change it to stereo.

3DSound will certainly be messing with the mix, trying to simulate surround sound. Try with it turned off and see if it makes it better or worse. I suppose its possible that the TV's internal "analog and/or freeview" tuner actually was designed to "enhance" vocals, to compensate for the poor quality of most TV's built in speakers.

The Sky+ box doesnt do that at all, it outputs the sound as close to the "original" mix as possible (bandwidth permitting).

The settings in the sky box should only affect the digital "SP/DIF", however you can try setting the digital output to stereo in the skybox, but I dont think it will make any difference to the sound over scart or phono connections.

Turning the bass and treble down slightly, and increasing the TV's volume should help vocals, and make sure that there are no "loudness" options enabled on the TV, as generally "loudness" is just a boost in bass and treble output anyway, it makes music a lot louder, but has very little effect on vocals.

Since were here, anything my brother records on his sky and puts on DVD to watch downstairs comes across wierdly sound wise. With the Simpsons, music within the show comes out far too loud and with Lost the voices always seem to sit too low in the mix (like the op said, obscured by background noises). Lost was always a bit wierd even when it was on normal TV (the bought DVDs are fine however) but the simposons never had this problem on normal TV. Does Sky just broadcast with a higher dynamic range (because it can I guess)?
