Settle an argument

Depends if he plays games or not. If he is my money bags then he will be happy as it will load up fast enough and browse the net. When you ask him to play crysis it might not work but he might just call you a geek and go and spend 50k on a new car!

Although he did no doubt pay over the odds there is much to be said for these dell systems.

Stability is usually very good as all the components are rigorously tested together, so it's unlikely to have any compatibility issues, such as ram not liking the motherboard etc.. The drivers used are certified and fully tested with the whole system.

Support can be excellent (depending on warranty chosen), with replacement parts sent out next day, and swapped on site.

All your drivers and updates are easily located on 1 web page so self maintaining is easy.

From a pure speed perspective you can do much better with self or shop custom builds. However for ease of use/maintenance/purchase/support he could have done worse.

Would have to agree there . . I loved my Dell laptop. Would never buy one of there desktops though because you can't overlock them.

Yeah I'd say most people who buy pc's from Dell get ripped regardless.

Give him 3Dmark by Futuremark and see what his score is.

Firmark is also quite a good benchmark.

Lots of businesses buy Dell items. They come prebuilt and ready to go, Dell do good deals when businesses buy hundreds/thousands of items like computers (including mouse and keyboard) and screens

I'm really sure they dont care whether the average home buyer thinks they are overpriced and wont run futuremark or play crysis, when they are designed to be compact, quiet and stable.

My new work machine is an Optiplex 780. It has 2gb ram, and an [email protected]. It has no power converter, just a kettle lead, is near silent, runs everything i use and is tiny. The old power converter on my Optiplex 6** almost the same size! I really dont know how they have got a powersupply inside. Size is 9" x 9" x 2"!

Dell or any other company that sell "gaming pcs" rip you off as people don't know any different.. I wouldn't buy alienware anymore as dell own it (my dell laptop has problems and sucks) he would be better sending it back getting money and buying one from here or somewhere like overclockers were you do get a decent setup if you pay more.
