i have an X2 555 and it plays most things pretty well with framerates that are acceptable so wouldnt say dual core is rubbish. admitidly it runs as a tri-core most of the time, but it will play things on dual core. but, i dont have any of the games shown in the benchmarks so maybe newer games will kill it, is so, then this post was useless.

Benchmarks disagree with me, I know, I'll take random quotes instead! This still doesn't prove the i3 isn't up to the job.

i do maintain though, the dual core does cope pretty well though, and im sure an i3 would be better. just annoyed i read your thread about the i5 upgrade you did stulid, it has made me want to upgrade, even though nothing really struggles on my current build, damn you and your shiney new bits.

Yep, its such a great CPU easily destroying the 955BE I had before.

I have had a few dual cores before and they just arent up to the job these days, and have you seen BF3 videos? damn!!!!

If your motherboard supports core unlocking have you tried it?

yeh its running as a tri-core most of the time as the 4th core is dead

i have been planning to hang fire for bulldozer to come out, if only to see if the 2500k prices go down, but by the time that happens ivy bridge will either be imminent or out (damn you amd for your delays) which will then make me hold fire again. but having read some IBs will be skt 1155 then maybe SB is the way to go as nothing good seems to be coming out about BD. but its just under £300 to get mobo and cpu, which is a big outlay

Ah good, well you got one core unlocked which is a good boost in games over a dual core.

And there will be IvyBridge socket1155 so a simple UEFI flash will mean they drop in.

yeh, everything runs fine, but occassionally i get stuttering for 5mins, then it runs fine again. im guessing something kicks off in the background, but not sure what.

Probably need a quad core CPU LOL.

I actually remember building a i3 530 for a friend and it wasnt to long till a i5 760 was getting dropped in as games were struggling on it.

lol i upgraded to this from my last 'real' build, which was an i7 920 D0 :rolleyes:

seriously though, not sure if i should go for a phenom X6 for the £130-£150 or wait a bit, get a 2500k+mobo, get a cheap case and build up my X2 555 in that, sell it and then get an SSD.

Don't bother with the X6, it has zero performance increase over an X4 for gaming.

but i only technically have an X3, and the price difference from a decent X4 and an X6 is not that much.

It's not even really worth upgrading from an X3. Most designed-for-PC games are dual core, and XBox360 ports are triple core, although there's a small performance gain for running background processes on the fourth.

If you're running a triple core @3.8GHz, it shouldn't really be causing problems. I would look at your system- do some virus and driver sweeps, and clean it up a bit. As long as your overclock is stable, there's nothing about that CPU that should be holding you back except in the most demanding of games.

yeh overall everything runs fine, but like i said, i occassionally get a 5min period of stuttering. the OC seems stable and has been stressed without errors.
but no, in reality, for a lot of games a dual core is fine.

Not sure what's causing that 5 min stuttering, could possibly be overheating, or your PSU, but I really don't know. Shouldn't be your CPU though.

not heat issue and psu seems ok. i think its a service/process kicking in, but cant for the life of me see what it is

is there any way to enable/disable services per user? i know you can disable startup apps, but not sure on services. maybe that way have a media user and a gaming user, only thing i can think of is MCE or something updating its database or windows checking for updates.
