I have a thread in the general hardware section about this, being new to the forum and not seeing this one :(

Anyway, Im building a SFF PC for my Dad for christmas. Basically, I dont know whether to go for a Shuttle, and work from there, or the Sugo Evolution, and start at the bottom. So far, the Sugo is slightly cheaper, and is in the lead, mainly because I'm not tied to the Shuttles PSU or motherboard.

Which would you guys recommend?

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB)
Shuttle XPC SD37P2 Aluminium Barebones System - Intel Pentium D (LGA775)
7900GS or X1950Pro (Silent variety)
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM
Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)
1Gb (2X512Mb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800)

OR

SilverStone 'SUGO' Evolution SG01B Black Aluminium Small Form Factor Case
ASUS P5B-VM iG965
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 OEM 775, 1.86 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache, OEM
250 Gb Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE16
Samsung SH-S183A/BEBN Black SATA 18x18 ±R Dual Layer DVDRW Writer OEM
7900GS or X1950Pro (Silent variety)
Zalman CNPS8000 Ultra Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler
500W Enermax Liberty Modular Series - ELT500AWT

I'd really like it to be as quiet as possible, and there is a slight possibilty that I'd OC the CPU a couple of hundred mhz if I could, without increasing the heat too much.

Like I said, they both work out at around £700, but its neither here nor there. The main question is, do I Sugo, or do I fly off with the Shuttle?

i would go with the sugo build, but thats only coz ive got 1 :p

hmm and as for the mother board i wouldnt get that asus 1 its way over priced and not that good of a board from what i hear yea it runs ok at stock but for £90.00 price tag you would want more, maybe the Asrock Conroe945G-DV would be better and the price on that seems ok, yes it uses slower ddr2 ram but if your not gonna be over clocking the system then i cant see any probs

still there both nice sff systems

but the sugo gets me vote :)

i run a amd x2 4400 in mine tho but i do use that psu on your list and its runs nice and quiet to. the temps im getting im my system are

30 idle
40 max

in the summer its
32-35 idle
42 max

so for a sff its great for cooling

Yeah Ive been looking at pics of your build, and it looks freaking sweet :D Im seriously considering the Sugo over the Shuttle. It just seems a hell of a lot more configurable and sexier ;)

Re: motherboard, I'm not sold on ASROCK motherboards. Yes, the Asus is expensive, but to be honest, you get what you pay for in the computing world.

Is the Sugo quiet then? Did you buy the crossflow bar to go with it?

Having had a quick flirtation with a Sugo SG-01, I am now fully back with a pair of top notch Shuttles [see sig]

lets just say the Sugo has entered the ranks of a one night stand, and my other 2 beauties will keep me happy till a new model comes along :)

as regards the proposed Shuttle config ..........

the MSI 7900 GTO 512 is a popular pick if you can afford to lose a pci-e slot

the 6300 is a clockers chip and you will be limited to 355 in bios so will never see the full potential that most 6300's have of 420+, get a higher multipler if you can stretch to it [6600e is again a popular choice]

1 gig is not going to be bad, but 2 gig would be more future proof even allowing for the 4 mem slots on the SD37, I know I am hoping to get a further 2 gig when the full blown vista is released. [currently running Vista RC2 and its luverly]

The Sugo looks like a SFF but believe me Shuttles are much more compact than the dims would suggest, the only plus point of a sugo is if you want to keep up with latest chipsets and you can get one in matx form, I still have the Sugo but it was gifted to the daughter, dumbass doesn't appreciate it either :)

well atm im using a stock heat sink and fan but thats the onlt thing in my system thats making any noise for now but im replacing that with the Thermaltake Blue Orb II but all the rest of the system is quiet yea

as for the cross-flow fan no im not using 1 of them as ive bin told it makes to much noise. but the Thermaltake Blue Orb II im geting will sort of do that job of pushing air out the back. as it will be siting close to the back grill.

yea thats true what Stephen B, is saying the sugo is a lot bigger than it looks. the only good side for me is that i can upgrade the system with out having to spend loads on new hardware every time :)

all i would need to buy is mobo cpu ram and a gfx card every now and then

here is a pix of the size differences

couldn't find 1 with the new shuttle model sorry

What didn't you like about the Sugo then? What makes the shuttle better in your opinion? :)

Overclocking isn't much of an issue, as if it does get overclocked, it wont be by much anyway. The only reason im going for that CPU, is because its the cheapest of the new CoreDuo2's :)

That graphics card DOES look interesting, but I cant afford that AND 2gb's of RAM. It would be either or, and I'm not 100% convinced my Dad needs that much RAM. Specially since I'm only using 1Gb RAM atm!

Thanks for the advice, I'm really looking forward to the end result of this :)

@Tosk

Could you point out to me what case is which? They all look about the same size to me, the Sugo being shorter, but wider?

EDIT: I still think the Sugo is damn sexy :) And there isnt that much difference?

TBH I wasn't impressed with cooling mainly, and the sg-01 was "supposed" to be a big improvement over the original, The Shuttle I.C.E. solution if far superior than selcting and installing additional silent cooling fans.

Also I made the common mistake of lifting the unit with the optical drive blanks removed and succeeded in cracking the flimsy mirrored drive surround,

And finally, the internal motherboard stand-offs where the wrong height [or the slots at rear for pci cards etc was wrong ]

Actually now I come to recall it all, it really is inferior in a lot of ways in my experience.

Hmmm, now I'm back to being undecided :D

Thanks though. I want to get this right, and luckally I've left plenty of time before Christmas comes around.

Thanks for the images btw Tosk! Extremely helpful. Whats your take on the Sugo compared to the Shuttle then?

ive modded my rom face using a Lian Li C-01B Aluminium CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Bezel to stealth the drive it works really nice

sorry for the crapy img but u can see how it sort of looks. i took that
img just after i modded it :)

im very happy with it.

i guess its upto u in the end really there is more work in gettings the sugo up and running, not as much for a shuttle tho as most of its per-installed ready to go.

ASRock are made by ASUS. It's a bit like Audi/Volkswagen/Seat/Skoda. Same platform, different aspiration levels in the marketing department.

I've built loads of ASRock based systems and they are excellent. If there is one thing I know in computing, you generally don't get what you are paying for, unless you are paying for the priviledge of having it on the day of release.

I would also go for the SG-01 based system, but the Shuttle will hold it's value better.

Oh I didnt realise, thanks for that! :D

Thanks for the input :D

Just to ask, whats the difference between the 945 and 965 platform, other than the fact the 965 supports ddr2 800 RAM?
