SFF PSU Upgrade opinions

The replacement Coolermaster V850 SFX PSU (comes in the NR200P MAX) also has some coil whine. Similar to the first unit when the GPU is under load not the CPU. So far not bad enough to reject again but be warned.

So fan noise and potential coil whine not exactly a great recomendation for this unit or just bad luck for both of us.
Yeah I was shocked the other night when I realised about 3 hours in to putting up with what I would considering still not acceptable fan noise for normal browsing/YT, that the fan had heavily ramped up yet again - didn't hear it at first as had loud bassy music on and it wasn't quiet in the house.

It's being collected tomorrow. Shall wait and get a SF750 Platinum. That better be quiet!

@keef247 sorry to hear about that brother.

Just looked at the Corsair sf850l and the fan doesn't kick in till 340w load at 10db then climbs to the 30dB at 600w and tops off at 40db 850w.

Check the Corsair site.

Thanks bro, seen that graph, just worries me as I have THE WORST luck, and looking online at reviews they say the SF850L is very loud and louder than the out of stock SF750?

It blows my mind if that's true as SURELY as 120mm is capable even at load of being quieter than a 92mm having to run harder to shift as much air? I was so close to buying the SF850L until I saw these reddit reviews, as I say it'll happen to me and not someone else... But I would personally rather it be 850w vs 750w for future proofing seeing as I'm already sacrafising 100w off the original psu spec I'm returning.

It looks like the 750 is the better option noise wise, sucks I loose 100w, but also means bit more room in the case. Just annoying I have to wait till Fri for stock 'IF' it comes in like claimed then be Sat or Sun before I get it... Knowing my luck stock won't come in, but it's a fiver more so is worth it.
See below, so even ragging it topping it out, which I wouldn't, it won't even be 30DB... So yeah I think that's sold it for me. Gives me some nice head room when I eventually chuck a thirstier cpu/gpu in this build in the future.

EDIT: Pre-ordered the SF750 Platinum. Praying it does actually arrive in stock on Fri like they're hoping, then I'll have it sat or worst sun. Ha my luck though... We shall see!

Lol had to edit my post as you update yours :D

@keef247 the platinum looks the best for noise not going above 30db at full tilt hope it arrives as a schedule.

Another mini review required ;)
Haha, yeah I kept messing about editing it lol!
Yeah man IIRC 28db, haha yeah it better, it's 'awaiting stock on the 8th' this always happens to me, swear it was in stock when I nearly bought it the first time grrr.

I have the worst luck with stuff so knowing me, Corsair will decide to discontinue it or summit, then I'll buy something like the SF850L and they'll bring stock back in for the 750!
Trust me stuff like this happens to me all the time. Along with stuff arriving knackered/not as claimed...

Cooler Master need to be slapped for "Two of the main benefits of a mini-ITX build are the reduced size requirements and reduced noise. The main cause of noise in a PSU is usually the fan. The V SFX Gold uses a 92mm FDB fan so it's extremely quiet. With its small size, high efficiency, and excellent heat dissipation, the overall noise is kept to an absolute minimum."

Haha, you shall get your review my brother ;)

but I figure if the SF850L has a 120mm SURELY that's got to be quieter when it has to spin up? I can't see a 92mm fan being as efficient/quiet as a 120mm, having both in my MITX for example as case and HSF the 120mm of the same brand/model IS quieter, so that was my theory, also don't like the fact the platinum costs more and is still only 7 year warranty and 100w less, so I'm gaining nothing more than the Platinum grading which to me will mean nothing in real world vs an 80+ gold right?
I don't know that much about SFF PSUs, but I think it is possible a 92mm fan could be quieter than a 120mm, even though you'd naturally assume it shouldn't be.

The ability of the PSU to get sufficient air to all the components and how it needs to respond to temperature would be sensitive to the design, so if you have one that has ideally placed components and is less heat sensitive (e.g. large heatsinks, polymer capacitors), then it could be quieter even with a 92mm fan.

I would assume that reviews test for noise in realistic scenarios for SFF PCs (e.g. hot, not much air), but I don't know if they do, so it is possible that the fan curves/behaviour isn't being reported accurately, though it's also not unheard of for manufacturers to switch the components between sample and retail units.

so I'm gaining nothing more than the Platinum grading which to me will mean nothing in real world vs an 80+ gold right?
In theory, a platinum PSU would produce less waste heat, which would support a more relaxed fan profile, but realistically I wouldn't expect a few watts to make a big difference. If there are changes in other components that make the platinum PSUs less sensitive, I couldn't say.

We shall see haha, it best behave, sick of this sort of nonsense on MITX 'scene tax', if they can make a motherboard that feature packed/small there's no excuse not to give me a 10 year warranty/silent running PSU when I'm paying way more for it, scumbags mate.

I swear it's just 'cause they can' mentality of ripping people off, knowing we'll pay it cause we want the form factor. In this day and age/technology capability, it's way past and excuse when they'll offer it to you for ridic money, i.e. it IS possible just at a price...

It best behave anyway or it'll get sent back and I'll just buy another case, and use another one of my bulletproof silent NXZT C850's in ;) lol probs still work out as cheap as buying a scene points sfx psu

I've been running one for the last couple of years, mines has no audible coil whine and is extremely quiet so expect you to have a better experience. Some people go as far as to mod a Noctua fan in them, though I've never felt the need to (although it looks cool aesthetically).

Update for @mickyflinn @Tetras
That has to be THE quickest RMA/refund I've ever received!
Even the matey from the competitor business, agreed with me that if it states it's 'Extremely quiet' etc etc (which it does in it's marketing description) that it isn't fit for purpose, I said to them how excited the fan got just browsing forums and doing nothing else with a mere 3600 non X/570 8GB, so imagine how ridiculous it would be if I was say using 600w gaming with more powerful hardware considering it's a 850w 80+ gold... TLDR it got collected the next day and I've been refunded just now :)

Just waiting for the SF750 80+ Platinum to turn up now at the suppliers, as it's 'due today' but we all know that's to be taken with a pinch of salt no matter the supplier as they never know if it actually is going to arrive when the manufacturer claims... And I have bad luck with everything so we shall see...

Good thing I have the main beast and 2 macbook pro's haha :D

So, @Tetras @mickyflinn after 21 days in total of being messed about, first with that junk Coolermaster Jet engine fan 'extremely quiet' branded SFX PSU that I RMA'ed, then buying the Corsair SF750 Platinum, but the stock arrival date changed twice... I FINALLY have one!

VERY happy boy!
It's been on for nearly 3 hours now doing a variety of things and the fan hasn't spun up once, very nicely packaged, I really like the cables bar the fact they're still far too long for SFF IMHO considering people literally moaned in reviews about them being too short?
But they're very nicely braided individually - which I both like and dislike, I like the effort, but a nice lil bracket/stay to hold them every X inch would have been better than zipties? Anyways they easily bend to where you want, then zip tie in sections and tuck up nicely in my Silverstone SG-13 case :)
Ran Heaven for macOS, and again zero fan kick in, the CM had a stroke when I dared to do that - it already was wetting itself trying to browse this forum doing nothing with just a 3600 nonX/RX 570 8GB :cry:
It's so nice to be able to use my silent air cooled ryzentosh/hackintosh again at the desk :)

Only silly thing I'll say is, they give you 4 screws for 8 holes? Bit tight? Even that rubbish CM V850 came with 8! As you need 4 for the bracket to mount to the PSU+4 for the bracket to the case?
I gave away my 8 to the buyer of my old PSU, but luckily found the last 4 of my case spares (as matey now has 8 of the others lol) so I just managed to make it happen haha!

So yeah TLDR, VERY happy with this despite it being stingy on the warranty 7 years vs 10 of the CM (which costs a fiver more as well FWIW) and all the ATX PSU's I buy have 10 years, so it's clearly just a common thing to rinse you with 'MITX tax' as I'll now refer to it as, if you know what 'M3 tax' or 'Type R' tax is when buying parts for example, you'll know what I'm getting at... They just do it cause we'll pay it lol. But I do like nice silent lil builds that can fit anywhere, so screw it, well worth it!
Having looked at various reviews, it's quieter than that tacky blingtastic ROG thing I've seen that's like £70+ more elsewhere, madness. For £155 and free next day delivery, I'm happy enough with this, as I got my NZXT in the sale in the main rig, so it balances out as if I've just bought 2 ATX PSU's ;) man maths haha.

I can definitely see why these were and still are considered THE goat of their time/size/performance/silence.

EDIT: fan is actually on now, barely :) and yep silent! Then turned itself off slyly. Haha, you can see why these are so highly rated.
