I've got a superhub 2 downstairs and had tried to use powerline to extend wifi to the top floor in addition to 2 powerline plugs for ethernet. Coulnt get them working so returned them this lunch time.

Just got back with a belkin N600 DB modem/router which states on the box that its for ADSL phone connections. Didnt notice this in the shop....

I had planned to put the superhub into modem mode and then go via powerline to the top floor of my house, into the N600 then out by CAT5 to my PC and also provide wireless internet.

Have I ballsed this up and got the wrong sort of router?

Im really starting from scratch with 2 routers etc so please go easy with tech talk at this point!

Thanks

If you want to use the SH2 in modem mode then you'll need a router with an Ethernet WAN port.

The best you could do with a pure ADSL router is to use it as an access point (with the SH2 back in router mode).

Unless Belkin routers have changed beyond all recognition I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.

Best bet is to return the router & either look at changing for a cable router

Or look at getting a pair of homeplug wireless access points like these & then leave the SuperHub as a router & disable the WiFi on it

Personally I really dislike this whole thing about using two routers to extend a wireless network - get a dedicated wireless access point /RANT

The box says ports are:

1 WAN (ADSL2)
1 LAN
1 USB

So, with the WAN port, can i connect it ok?

Appreciate the heads up with the make. Ill see if i can get it to work, if its not exceptional, ill take it back tomorrow!

Recommendations for a better piece of hardware from ocuk?

Googling around it's actually just a router (not a router + modem in one), the WAN port is an ethernet one. It should work fine with the SH2 in modem mode, regardless of the type of internet connection.

EDIT: Actually, I may be wrong, I just noticed they have both the router + modem and the standalone router model with the same name. If the WAN port is grey, then it has an ADSL modem built in, which won't work with your SH2. If it's yellow, then it's an ethernet WAN port and will work.

Belkin rather unhelpfully use the same model number for their routers, for example there's two different routers, but have different WAN connectivity options:

  • PLAY N600 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Modem Router
  • Play N600 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router

From the sound of it the OP has the top one, which is the ADSL version. So he will need to change it

I have the top one but the top port is grey.

strange as the box says in ports that there's a WAN!

Ill get this taken back!

So, i need a cable router that does wi-fi! How does a Netgear N600 sound?

^^ Thanks for the recommendation, ill get one ordered!

As far as options go, whats your thoughts on using this at the end of a powerline to run my PC and wi-fi at the top of the house (3 storey) with internet being pumped from the superhub 2 which gives poor wi-fi but fine BB speeds around the house?

Is there a better way to use the one you linked?

Thanks for everyone's input here so far!

Ideally it's best to use an ethernet cable with the modem, as depending on how your electrical mains is wired around the house, and the quality of the powerlines can reduce the speed by a fair bit.

From the sounds of things there may be a chance the distance is too big from the bottom and top floor (3 storey is quite the distance...). Any chance you could perhaps install a long Cat 6 cable instead?

I wish! Could perhaps get away with running from 1st to 2nd floor.
Speeds from ground floor are circa 60meg,
1st floor 40-50 meg
2nd floor 20-30 meg!
