Shadows in FEAR kill my performance on X1950pro

In the readme txt, the guidelines are turn off any anti-virus or other programs running. Sorry to point out what may be the obvious but maybe its worth a try? Good luck

Your system is very simular to the one i built about 2 weeks ago, when testing Fear maxed out all options at 1280x1024; the lowest fps was 28 using built in game bench test. Imo your 1gb of ram is the reason and if you care to read Fear's 'read me' game file; it actually says peak performance max settings will require 2gb. ;) :)

Yeah sorry, Nvidia dont do driver support, their 8 series support is absolutely dire, only 3x sets of drivers in over 5 months for XP which were utter garbage, even their Vista support is atrocious, then ATi have a new card due, so they start slinging drivers out on the hr as they know ATi do driver support (release an Official set every month for both XP and Vista for all their cards), and everyone is waiting for their card because of it, and they know they are going to get a lot of defectors getting shot of their 8 series cards for ATi's, so they slung more drivers out in 2x days than they have ever done in over 5 months to stop that happening, make ppl think they are now doing support, not to wait for the ATi card and buy their 8's now instead, and also the ppl with 8's stay with them and not dump em for the ATi card as they are now doing drivers. :)
Stear clear of Soft Shadows full stop, they dont look any better and cause slowdown on an 8800gtx, plus im sure they disable the AA when turned on.

Yeah i was being sarcastic there at how they ballsed them up. :D

Must admit these beta 158.22's are working great, but we all know they have only released drivers because their rivals card is a week away, and fair enough they are working in games now, but what about upcoming games that have not been tested on these drivers, anyone know if Crysis etc.. will run fine on these drivers when they are released, yeah you could say but there will be new drivers by the time those games appear, but no there wont stop kidding yourselves, as i said above, they dont do driver support, they are only slinging drivers out on the hr because their rivals card is only a week away, they will not do anymore drivers until their rivals next card is due for launch the R700 probs, so if thats about another year away, then wait till then before Nvidia start slinging drivers out on the hr again, as they will have to stop ppl buying those cards by making everyone think they are doing support again. :D

Be no good still releasing drivers on the hr after those cards are out, as it will be a waste of time then, theres nothing they can do then, if those cards are out they can not stop ppl buying em, only chance is what they are doing now, slinging drivers out like theres no tomorrow just before those cards hit to make ppl buy theirs, as they can't buy any others yet.

nv arnt that bad with support. Youll get a new set 6 months later called the 200 series which just updates the .inf files to support (er ...recognise) more cards ;)

you sure its not the soft-shadows option in fear that is killing your performance?

No, this is just with ordinary shadows enabled. The only way I can get my frame rate to stay above 20 fps in certain areas with shadows enabled is to drop res to 800x600 which looks far worse than no shadows. As soon a I enable shadow even with every thing but texture maxed out my frame rate jumps by anything from 50-100 fps with everything at minimum with shadows enabled it's 100+.

Basically my frame rate is entirely limited by shadows which just doesn't seem right to me. I've tried everything suggested on this forum, all to no avail.

Methinks the card is the problem as I have the same model + 2GB Ram and FEAR is really slow for me also.

Initially I thought the x1950pro was a top card but now I am starting to suspect otherwise as almost any post mid 2005 game I try @ 1360x768 on my HDTV struggles for FPS with it regardless of AA or AF settings. Disabling vsync improves it a little but on a 40" screen tearing is very noticeable.

It seems to have serious limitations above 1024x768 which I suspect are both memory & fillrate bandwidth related.

The strange thing is that Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is really smooth on the exact same setup so some games are a lot better than others.

I'm gonna sell mine anyway to get an 8800GTS as cannot be bothered with it any more especially considering ATI's lack of fixed image scaling on the HDTV connection (the options disappear when you go from a TFT to HDTV physical connection) and ATI do not seem interested in fixing it anytime soon which means anything with a non 16:9 res looks stretched.

x1950pro can handle above 1024x768 absolutely fine, i used an x1800 XT 512mb at 1280x1024 and it cut through everything maxed out with 2xAA/16xAF Including Fear/Oblivion etc... even had HDR on as well in Oblivion and it ran superb, if your saying the x1950pro can't handle above 1024x768 then there is definately something wrong there, as it can with ease, and thats using AA/AF as well. :)

For me it cannot @ 1360x768 with Vsync on + HDR + AA + AF everything goes really slow on Cats7.4. If I revert to an old DX8 engined title then its fine but only DX9 ( stuff like Doom3, Quake4, Prey or SC3 run smoothly @ this res for me. I am pretty certain this card is not really designed for 1360x768 even thouhg it has 512MB it is not fast enough by a long way.

My 512MB x1950Pro handles pretty much everything maxed out 6x AA, 1440x900 etc fine. Even Oblivion was ok with HDR and AA on, outside it went as low as 30 sometimes.

can you run a 3dm05 test to see what score the gfx card gets? that way can see if everything is ok with the card or not. currently everyones just saying that the card is fast and it sould be doing higher fps but no one is looking into what is actualy wrong with your setup.

so lets progress now: first thing run 3dm05 to check if your card is running properly.

I'll bet you pounds to pistachios that NV release another driver before Crysis is out.

When you sit back and look at it, NV's record with drivers over the years it's actually very good. They had a decent unified driverset (Detonator) years before ATI introduced Catalyst; to be honest it's only Vista that's come along and thrown a spanner in the works.

It's easy to critisise NV for driver support, but at least they've had the guts to actually get a DX10 card out there. One thing is undeniable: Over the past few months, NV's DX10 driver support has been infinitely better than ATIs :)

Sticking the boot in is easy to do when there's nothing to compare it with. Once we've got both manufacturers with new cards on the market needing support in multiple OS/DX versions, we'll see who the daddy is in terms of driver support :) Personally I reckon they'll both do a decent job by then.

Just run 3Dmark 05 and scored 10010 pts, which seems about normal. even the FEAR in game benchmark seems to run normally. I can't remember what exact score I got but with max settings and 2x AA & 8x AF enabled, it was something like min 30/ave 50/max 100. It's just certain points in the game just crawl with shadows enabled.

Fear uses a lot of ram. Are you still on 1GB ram?

Yes I am still on 1GB, but I still get this problem with minimum settings which uses less than 1GB. I also didn't have this problem with my 6800GT which ran fine as long as I used medium textures to keep the memory usage under 1GB.

The perfomance I'm getting at the moment is closer to that of my old 128MB 6800nu, only I think it hitches more at the moment even with medium textures.

i have exact same card running on a e4300 @ 2.4 with 2gb ram and it runs fine with everything maxed with softshadows on, 55fps avg on the in built test demo latest drivers on vista

does seem strange as to why its happening, cant think what it could be.
