Hi,

Well hopefully soon I will have 1NCB, I am thinking about whether I should sell the 1.6 Focus for a Trueno AE86, opinions?

Anyone have any experience with the AE86 at all?

Looks like an older toyota carolla to me ? is this an import version ?

Yup. It has the 1.6 4AGE engine in it producing 125-130bhp.

great advice,

Yeah i have to really check out the cost of it, i didn't expect them to be too bad, but i suppose with them being imports thats not going to help.

Lots of people are currently buying them and trying to drift them (they're not even particularly good at drifting as standard, but it's due to Initial D), and are crashing them, pushing both the purchase, and insurance price upwards.

The same thing that happened to Civics when TFATF came out. The same thing that will ultimately happen to other good, RWD driftable cars when The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift comes out!

Yup unfortunately i think your correct. :( I can see when the new F&F is out the S2000's insurance will go up quite a bit.

I really do wonder why they have stopped doing RWD hatches now really.

How strange is that, the 2 cars i mentioned in my last post, you 2 own 1 each. :p I have always like the mr2 and mx5, just didnt realise quite how mad the pricing would be for the AE86.

Siliconslave,

I know you have the Mk2, got much info on the Mk1 or any links to where one could find out more?

Personally I'd not touch one. If you want something like that, I'd suggest either:
- S13. Heavier and not as well balanced, but LOTS more power even as standard, easily tuned for even more and dirt cheap. Of course one option on the S13 is to rip out excess weight, which is a whole lot cheaper than adding an s/c to the AE86
- MX5. Before you laugh, have a think a bit more about this. The MX is around 50-100kg heavier, 50:50 balance, 15-20hp more and generally don't have more rust than the titanic. IMO the MX is the soft top equivalent of the AE86.

Don't worry I like the MX5 so i wont laugh. :)

What engine was it in the S13 then?

Really not sure what insurance would be like really with a 1.8 Turbo. Its about 0-60 in about 7 seconds isnt it?

I suppose its really down to the insurance cost and what i think to the drive of the cars. Really does look like between MX5 and S13. I looked on autotrader and i didnt realise just how cheap S13's were.

But without the practicality offered by the FWD hatches, a 3 Series Coupe would be a better bet.

Fox, here is one for you. If you had roughly £4k, and RWD was preferable. What car would you buy?

4k and RWD, even though i love the MX i wouldn't buy one for 4k, not that fond of the MK1 and you deffo would want the 1.8 over the 1.6.

I really like the 200sx and it would be my choice for 4k, if you could get 6 - 7k together i would go for a Mk2 MX.

See I like the Mk1 myself. :) Also yes the 1.8 would be the engine of choice me thinks.

I suppose the S13 is easier on the insurance compared to the S14a?

Fox,

Really RWD is a requirement to me now. You know, i think i wouldnt mind having a test drive of the 5 series.

The mondeo at least has the advantage of practicality. What is the car going to be used for? I'm assuming daily driver which is also fun to take for a bit of a blast? A 200SX sounds like it would do that well assuming you don't need the back seats to be too roomy or the practicality of a hatch.

Daily driver. Don't really need rear seats. The max i have is a few rc cars and planes but whenever i do them im usually alone or others go with their own cars. I have realised i dont need all the space that i thought i would. The longest journeys i do is like 1 hour and that would not be regular at all.

I mostly have a car for fun, driving experience goes infront of comfort for me really. Also interiors are not a major problem with me, if it wasnt soft top/t-bar i would want a/c really.

Lopéz,
Yup you make a very good point there, if only they were cheaper!

L0rdMike,
I have heard just about anything there is to know over MSN about the 4A-GE and Mk1 MR2. :p Thank SKILL for that one. ;)

Nickg,
I realised Fox would say something completely different to whats been said already, hense why i asked him. Get a good variatey of opinions.

Zip,
If i had the money i would get an Elise without a 2nd thought, only fully comp though. ;)

Not trying to start a crazy debate on FWD and RWD....but why do you feel you need a RWD car........is it purely so you can drift or slide the rear about?

1) I feel safer driving one. All the wheels are controlled and the reactions feel more natural with a rwd to a fwd.

2) Id rather have oversteer then understeer, at least that way you can still drive the car and not totally out of control.

3) Yes they are more fun then fwd cars with drifting etc.

4) Why do all the work through 1 pair of wheels when you can spread it through all the wheels?

But please, i really do not want to change this thread into a fwd vs rwd arguement. If anyone wants to talk more about it, please make a new thread.

Zip,
I wouldnt want an E30 M3, arnt all of them LHD?

Nickg,
Seriously Fox is correct here. I asked what car HE would buy, i didn't confine him to one style of car either. Thus his suggestions being perfectly valid.

Pigeon,
Volvo 340 is a laugh but its not 100% drifting i want, i do want a car that can still turn. ;)

Ok so the list of what everyone has suggested is...

Mk1 MR2
Mk1 MX5
S13 200SX
S12 180SX (Silvia)
Isuzu Piazza
E30 3 Series
E39 5 523i/528i
Mondeo V6
Volvo 340

Hmm.

Yes i have but i need more then zero practicality. :) Really the MR2 is as far as im willing to go in lack of practicality.

I was after something a bit more better overall really.

What sort of mpg does the rotary get? Its quite low isnt it when powering it?
