Share your setup - media server/small form pc

No, its just straight storage. I have various external drives which i use for backups although i've not done anything for quite some time!

As for whether you need a RAID controller i think would depend on whether your motherboard has any RAID capabilities.

Some awesome set up guys. That really is still on my 'to do' list, to make a nas and stream from that.

Confused, would you mind if I send a wee message in trust?

The server is maintained (when needed) by using TeamViewer from another machine. Downloads are handled automatically using applications like Sickbeard and CouchPotato.

This might be a daft question but is there a reason to use TeamViewer and not just the Windows Remote Desktop program?

Two reasons:

1) Remote Desktop logs you on into a separate desktop environment. You can't then manage any applications that are running in the "main" desktop. TeamViewer allows you to see exactly what you would see if you plugged a monitor in.

I have my server automatically logging in on startup, as some of the applications I run don't run as a service (for example, I run a copy of XBMC full-time on the server to deal with database updates). By using TeamViewer, I can view and control these applications.

2) TeamViewer can access the machine from anywhere in the world, and can be done via PC, tablets, mobile phones etc.

Can't decide between two options:

One - ~£50
Buy an external hard drive and back-up photography manually.
Use the computer as my media server and PC gaming device in the living room, left on 24/7 (with hibernate schedules) to download and then play directly off that with XBMC. Note, I hardly ever game.

Two - £330
Buy a Synology DS213J with 2x2TB WD Red for media storage and time machine backup for photography. It would sit next to the router.
Use Powerline plugs to connect to the Media server (which would be in the spare room rather than the living room) and stream to the PS3 via DLNA. The server would be left on 24/7 as before. I lose the ability to game with this and kind of makes me feel like the PC is wasted.

The NAS gives much more flexibility and redundancy but it's more power and much more expensive. Do you think it is worth it?

I would be controlling the media server via TeamViewer as I use a keyboard and mouse at the min, which is a pain in the bum.

Im currently also running a microserver on windows 7 and an xbmc machine (zotac zbox) for playback, i have RSS downloading my content via torrent sites and i use VNC to remote desktop into the pc either local or remote from app on phone or pc.

i currently only have 7tb of storage in my server but getting close to my limits on some of the drives so an upgrade will be due soon.

if any of you have seen my house build thread in my sig then you'll know i have a cupboard running the server, network distribution and hdmi distribution with all devices stored in node0 (cupboard) using HDMI over CAT to my tv locations
