Hi,
I am not sure where to put this as it could be software, network or hardware based but I am hoping you guys can offer some advice.
I am a photographer by profession, my Win 7 PC has 5 external drives as well as a couple of internal ones.
I have a USB 1TB drive that I have set up on my PC. This drive has a couple of small folders that aren't used very much and a photos folder. The photos folder is shared on the network so that my wife can access it.
She has a win 7 laptop that connects via wifi to the network, it doesn't have any issues reading another shared drive with films on, it has no issues with the internet but, it really struggles like hell with this photo folder that is shared. She puts her photos on her laptop from her phone or camera and copies them the Z: drive (photos folder). It then backs up during the early morning to Google storage space online.
It takes a stupid amount of time to copy them over although on the odd occasion it works normally. She uses Picasa to access the Z:, edit photos and print from. Even that is taking several minutes just to rotate an image.
It normally works fine on my PC although I am right clicking to find the size of the folder and the number of files but it won't give me an accurate figure.
Each time I try it has increased in size like it's taking ages to read it.
Any ideas of what I can try to try and speed this up? It's only a few months old and seems fine otherwise!
