Hey

Trying to get a printer setup for a friend.

They have a vista system with an HP laserjet connected to it

and an xp system which they want to connect to the laserjet over the network.

Whats the best way of doing this.

I have tried sharing the printer, I ahve tried adding a new printer by selecting over the network but it can never see the printer.

I have never done this before so am in need of some advice?

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Open up the 'network and sharing centre' and check that 'Network discovery' and 'Printer sharing' are on. Try it on both machines.

on pc1 (with printer) right click printer, sharing, share

on other pc2

start
run
\\pc1 (type the 'computername', not pc1)

enter username/password for that pc if prompted
double click printer

Right, some updates:

just been back to ahve a go. I set a password for the user accounts for each system.

I then set the printer to be shared gave it a sharename of HPLJ

clicked start on xp system and press run typed: \\peter-pc\hplj and it fails. I tried disabling kaspersky on both systems and it allows me to connect and I can add the printer.

It sort of works when installing the driver so i went to hp's website and downloaded the driver for the HP Laserject 1020 and tried to install it but it asks me to plug the usb cable in but I want to connect to it over the network?

I think the driver is installed as it shows up in the printers window and if I print to the printer from the xp system then the document shows up in the print window on both the xp system and the vista system but it has an error on the vista system saying "Error Processing Command" and then does not print.

Any ideas?

How do I allow this file and printer sharing throguh kaspersky?

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Not sure about Kaspersky specifically. You could try turning off Kaspersky firewall and use the built in Windows firewall. I have printer sharing set up and it behaves fine with Windows firewall.

All the HP printer drivers I've ever used have given me the option to skip the part where you plug in the USB cable. Personally I would blow away any HP stuff relating to the printer on both machines, turn Kaspersky firewall off and start again. HP drivers aren't the best in the world. Just install the drivers on the host (leave the XP machine alone) and then just try to add the printer.

the HP drivers are installed on the host and it tried to copy them over and install them but has an error near the end of installation sort of

I've had this issue, the drivers that the host sends to the client fails to install, I too tried the latest HP drivers etc, but it just was a pain..

In the end I realised my NAS had a built in Print Server, so used that in the end! and it worked flawlessly, plus didn't need the host PC switched on (obviously :))

I now use a Belkin USB network hub as I have a Canon multifunction printer/scanner, and that was the only way to share it seemlessly without requiring a host PC on..
