I need to share some Excel workbooks with my colleagues. All the workstations connect to a server on which we have a shared drive with the Excel files in.

I've created some workbooks and "shared" them, via the Tools menu ->Share Workbook and checked the box to allow changes to the workbook. But,whenever another user accesses the file it says "Filename [Read only] [Shared]" and any alterations to the file can't be saved without renaming the file and saving it as a new file. Then if someone else accesses this file the same thing happens...

We are using MS Excell 2003. Any ideas? Help!

Are multiple people trying to open the same file at the same time?

If so, the file will be locked for editing by the first person opening the file - the second person who opens it won't be able to make changes to it whilst the file is locked.

We had the same (or similar) issue with a database we had setup to record student information/detentions/behaviour.

Since then we moved it to a SQL Database and integrated into SIMS.net (Registration/Student Data management application).

What is the workbook for?

The work book is really simple and only one person at a time will be accessing it. It won't even allow that. Is there any other (MS?) app that will allow multiple users to access a file to add notes and comments?
