Sharing files between two home computers using two different internet connections

I have a desktop connected to a 1000mb connection and the wife has a 6mb connection. How can I share/edit/delete files between each computer?

I just tried Google's Gbridge, but from what I can see it only shares files. I want to be able to add, modify and delete things too.

My PC > Ethernet Cable > 1gb modem
Wife PC > Ethernet Cable > 100mb router > 6mb modem

The router I currently have is only 100mb, so that limits my connection. I'm in the market for the Asus RT-N66U, but before I get it I want to see if I can network them together.

I'll take a look at ad-hoc WiFi, thanks for the suggestion.

If the wife shares the connection, then surely that will limit my speeds. Ideally I want the 1gb connection to myself.

It's not about pulling 1gb, my router is capped at 100mb, which is roughly a max download of 10mb. When using the 1gb connection, I can pull 70mb using a torrent program or simultaneous downloading. Not to mention the upload difference is night and day.

If I share the connection using the 100mb router, I'd be capped. As to why I'm considering buying a gigabit connection. But before I do that, I want to see if we can just keep the setup how it is as we only really need to share media files and such.

The question still stands. I want to basically share certain files and folders and be able to add/modify and delete them just like a home server but using separate modems.

I'm messing with Gbridge's Autosync at the moment to backup our image folders but it's gonna take a while to transfer 25GB over the net. I think I'll just stick the images on a USB drive and transfer them over. Hopefully the autosync will still work.

1. Can't cancel wife's 6mb line, she renewed it for another two year contract without first consulting me. -.-
2. A gigabit router costs cash. I want to make sure there are no other options first.

By all means I want too, but after getting this gigabit contract without telling her, she is adamant we make this work without getting a new router. I know, I know, you don't have to tell me.

Setup your PC and the wifes on the same local network with a switch or a router with multiple LAN connections and set the her router up with a static IP and disabled DHCP then use that IP as the gateway and dns server for her local network settings then she will be using the 6mbit connection for internet and able to share files over the LAN.
How to setup my PC on my wifes local network when I'm connected to the net using another modem? :o

Looks great only I'm not sure how to change a modems IP without a router?

Also, this involves buying a switch too. I was looking a way to do this without spending any more cash.

Op you are complicating things for no reason.
No, my wife is. I just wanna buy a gigabit router, she on the other hand wants a workaround without spending anymore cash.

Hey, networking isn't simple for everyone you know. XD

I ended up using an old wireless USB adapter to connect to our home network.

I still have my fast internet and the wireless USB adapter connects to my wifes wireless network to share files. Phew!

One question, how does Windows 7 prioritise between the wireless USB adapter and my ethernet connection when both are running? Like, if I download something will it use the ethernet connection first or a combination of both connections? -.-

Both connections are in the same house.

I wanted to keep my gigabit connection as well as share files locally with wife on her 6mb connection.

It's worth a shot, have a good sob story, don't get angry and see how you get on. Better than the mess you're in now.
I wish. We've already had the 6mb connection for over a month now.

Can anyone answer my previous question?

How does Windows 7 prioritise between the wireless USB adapter and my ethernet connection when both are running? Like, if I download something will it use the ethernet connection first or a combination of both connections?

Why do I need two network interfaces when I can already use the gigabit connection as normal and share files with wife's PC on the wireless USB adapter?

When downloading certain things I can hit 80mb, so that's definitely the wired connection, but I can still access the homegroup, share files and watch media content from my desktop PC on wife's laptop. Is that normal? XD

My wired connection's IP starts with 123 while my wireless connection starts with 192. Subnets are different too (254 and 255) as well as the gateways.

im confused. why not just hook it all up to 1 LAN and set different gateways for either machine if you really want to keep both internet connections?
Bingo. Because my wired connection isn't using a router, the gateways are already different. As to why I guess I can use both the wired and wireless connection from my desktop. If I was using two routers, I guess it would conflict on the same gateway.

If certain people actually acknowledged that I suck with networks, then perhaps we could have I don't know, coalesced, evolved and moved forward on the matter. :p

Anyway, job done. I achieved what I wanted with the workaround I needed using a wireless USB adapter. Yes, it's not as simple as buying a gigabit router, but then that avenue was closed from the get go.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help. :)
