Sharing files between two home computers using two different internet connections

I have a desktop connected to a 1000mb connection and the wife has a 6mb connection. How can I share/edit/delete files between each computer?

I just tried Google's Gbridge, but from what I can see it only shares files. I want to be able to add, modify and delete things too.

Even with your 1Gb connection, you'll be limited by your wifes 6mb (probably woeful upload speed).

Can you not look into something like ad-hoc WiFi for file sharing?

Is there a reason why she can't just share your connection? Surely it would make things much easier if you were on the same network...

My PC > Ethernet Cable > 1gb modem
Wife PC > Ethernet Cable > 100mb router > 6mb modem

The router I currently have is only 100mb, so that limits my connection. I'm in the market for the Asus RT-N66U, but before I get it I want to see if I can network them together.

I'll take a look at ad-hoc WiFi, thanks for the suggestion.

If the wife shares the connection, then surely that will limit my speeds. Ideally I want the 1gb connection to myself.

Have you found any server you can actually pull 1gb/s from?

I'm starting to think you're trolling, but share the connection and save the money. (Put her LAN port to 10mb if you have to.)

It's not about pulling 1gb, my router is capped at 100mb, which is roughly a max download of 10mb. When using the 1gb connection, I can pull 70mb using a torrent program or simultaneous downloading. Not to mention the upload difference is night and day.

If I share the connection using the 100mb router, I'd be capped. As to why I'm considering buying a gigabit connection. But before I do that, I want to see if we can just keep the setup how it is as we only really need to share media files and such.

The question still stands. I want to basically share certain files and folders and be able to add/modify and delete them just like a home server but using separate modems.

So wait a minute.
You're losing 900 megabits of throughput because you have the wrong router, yet you're being so greedy that you cant let your wife share your net with you?

Here are the steps you should take:

  1. Cancel your wife's 6Mb line.
  2. Get a gigabit router capable of QoS.
  3. Do sharing the way it's meant to be done.

You simply will not be "capped" if you share your net with your wife. Routers are intelligent devices, and even more intelligent if they do QoS. A router doesn't simply split a connection in half if you share it with someone.

Setup your PC and the wifes on the same local network with a switch or a router with multiple LAN connections and set the her router up with a static IP and disabled DHCP then use that IP as the gateway and dns server for her local network settings then she will be using the 6mbit connection for internet and able to share files over the LAN.

I'm messing with Gbridge's Autosync at the moment to backup our image folders but it's gonna take a while to transfer 25GB over the net. I think I'll just stick the images on a USB drive and transfer them over. Hopefully the autosync will still work.

1. Can't cancel wife's 6mb line, she renewed it for another two year contract without first consulting me. -.-
2. A gigabit router costs cash. I want to make sure there are no other options first.

By all means I want too, but after getting this gigabit contract without telling her, she is adamant we make this work without getting a new router. I know, I know, you don't have to tell me.

How to setup my PC on my wifes local network when I'm connected to the net using another modem? :o

Set the 1Gb modems LAN IP to 10.0.0.254, make sure DHCP is set to 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.100 (for example)
Set the 6Mb router to 10.0.0.253 and disable DHCP
Plug both routers into a switch.
Set your PC to DHCP.
Set your wifes pc to 10.0.0.101 (or outside the DHCP scope of your router), mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 10.0.0.253.
Plug both PC's into switch.

Both PC's on the same network, both able to access their own internet connections.

Looks great only I'm not sure how to change a modems IP without a router?

Also, this involves buying a switch too. I was looking a way to do this without spending any more cash.

Op you are complicating things for no reason.
No, my wife is. I just wanna buy a gigabit router, she on the other hand wants a workaround without spending anymore cash.

Sell items to spend cash to make life simple... well in networking terms. :)

you could have those harddrives which connect directly to the internet and you are able to get files from it wherever you are located. it is called something like home media server harddrives or so.
