Sharing LAN connection over wireless?

I moved in to my new university halls a couple of days ago, and was a bit let down to find out that no wireless is provided. Its not a huge issue, I just like using my Eee in bed etc. sometimes.

Currently the internet connection comes in through an Ethernet port. However, my computer also has an additional wireless card. Is there any way I can share the internet Ethernet connection over a private wireless network to my Eee?

I used to have two computers set up like this a long time ago, but I beleive that was with a USB ADSL modem for the internet connection and a wire linking the 2 PC's.

Do I stand a chance? Any advice?

Some wireless adapters allow you to set them up as a software access point which you would then be able to connect to. Not sure but think you would need to create a bridge in your network connections to link the two.

On the other hand you could get a cable wireless router. Plug the ethernet cable into its WAN/uplink port and then connect your PC with another ethernet cable to the LAN port. Connect the eee using wireless. Zyxel NBG-334W which will do that fine is around £40 iirc

I had thought of that, I even have a spare router at home, but there are rules which clearly state that this is allowed. Bridging the connection also doesnt work.

Is there any way the IT technicians would ever know if I was using a router? Besides detecting the network..

I suspect they are only assuming one IP address per room, so you will need to create your own internal network either with internet connection sharing on your PC or using NAT hardware such as a DSL/cable router.

If your content to just have one computer on at the same time you could put a simple hub, switch or wireless router near the outlet and use what ever connection suits.

Easiest way to detect illegal hardware will allways be to get the key to your room

Find a router that allows you to enter your own mac address, set the wan MAC the same as your PC.

As long as you don't have external admin enabled, there's no real way to tell remotely, and I'm sure they have to give you notice before inspecting your room?
