Sharp IGZO 7680x4320, 120Hz and HDR

Ever seen it? I've seen those 5k macs and my god compared to 1440p they are magnificent, when we can push 144hz on those I'll be creaming my pants, I'll actually probably die and be found like that though

Magnificent on displaying still images? sure, but that's .. well, not very useful.

There is no 5K content to watch and no PC that can reasonably pull of 5K (or 8K, for the matter) on 100+ hz. And even if you did a quad-way out of Titan P or Titan Volta when it appears... did you see, for example, witcher 3 in 4K? doesn't look much different from witcher 3 in FHD, to be quite honest. Games just don't have that "wow" feeling in 4K to me. Movies do, but there's barely any 4K content despite 4K being around a while already.

In short: I'd gladly trade all that 4K+ nonsense for problem-free OLED display in 21:9, at 90-100hz. That's all I really want to see :p

Doesn't even have to be on still images for be to notice the difference but then again I do wear glasses or contacts which helps. I agree I want to see a decent 21:9 monitor but they are so expensive atm that nobody can really afford them unless you are really into that kind of thing with tons of money.

Simply downsampling from 4k on my 1080p monitor in The Witcher 3 gives me a serious wow factor. Cant imagine how good it would look on a native display.

As game environments and character models and all get more and more detailed, we are going to need higher resolutions to resolve it cleanly. 4K will probably be about the sweet spot needed as we push into ever more detailed graphics over the next 5 years or so.

When we do start getting OLED monitors, do not expect to find them at sub 4k resolutions. They are going to be high end models, and we're heading into a 4k world anyways. 1080p TV's are becoming scarcer and scarcer in shops and relegated to bottom tier budget sets. 4k will become the new standard and you should probably just accept that. And enjoy it!

I'm sure we'll have 21:9 2160p panels eventually.

When Volta is released ultrawide fad will sink like a stone.

Unfortunately it has infected like 90+% of forumites already so monitor manuf's think we all want fish-eyed novelty panels and screw 4K. :o :p

Going by various forums and youtubers, 21.9 is looking to be far more popular than 4k now.

Also, how is it fish eyed? 21.9 isn't just an increased FOV, it "extends" the FOV/side screen real estate, not "increasing" FOV where you then see the fish eye effect:

More than 33 million pixels. In a display that size.

Quite a muscle flex with what they can currently do, but like all technology, 8K will probably be in your front room - at quite a cost - 15 years from now. Although apart from the odd movie, nothing will be 8K till at least 25 years time.

There's already quite a bit of 8k content on youtube -

I expect 8k to be in living rooms in well under 25 years, probably ~6

I think 8k wont be 'a thing' outside of rich, expensive setups for a very long time. You need a truly large TV for the average living room setup to experience any real noticeable benefit over 4k. It's going to take quite a while for 4k to really start seeing more mainstream content production as well. Hell, most HDTV channels are still limited to 720p.

4k will see quite a lot of people having significant diminishing returns over 1080p. 8k will be even moreso and will mostly be an utter waste. I dont think the gaming industry is going to be particularly keen on adopting it, either. We'd at the very least be looking at Playstation 6-generation, and probably not even then, which is already gonna some 10 years off or so.

4k is gonna take us quite far. Really doubt 8k will take off before we've simply run out of things to do with surplus GPU power and broadcasting/streaming bandwidth. Which aint gonna happen anytime soon.

Yet you still see some people ranting that they can't wait to get their hands on a 5-6" 4K phone  maybe their intent is to shove it into their eyeballs for half baked VR.
