I've just managed to shatter my toe nail all the way down from the tip to the base in two places.

Would you go to the hospital.. Is there anything they can do.

The pain is immense, but i dont want to spend the whole night waiting around for them to say there's nothing they can do.

Anyone in here with some medical knowledge?

the pain will go away with time(take a pain killer), the pain is the soft tissue under your exposed nail, it will harden up the old nail will fail off, a nice new one will be formed.

enjoy your new toe nail.

yeah i know i wont die over it, but just want to make sure i don't need any antibiotics or anything as such. Hate to lose a toe cos i didn't get it sorted right away.

then go to a doctor, but from experience it just takes time for the new nail to be formed, and I never went to a doctor, just waited.

I live in America now, if i go to see a doctor in an ER this time of night it'll cost me a few hundred bucks.

Times like this you wish you were back in Blighty under national health.

You can always call NHS direct (is it still available?) and they will be able to advise you, otherwise your out of hours doctor or you can wait and go to your nearest minor injuries clinic.

One of my flatmates at uni told me his uncle died from stubbing his toe. Stubbed it, bled a bit, got infected, and then died from gangreen.

I've had an infected finger from when I cut through my finger and finger nail with a japanese pull saw. That got infected and was not pleasant! Anything to do with the cuticle of a nail is reasonably prone to infection as lots of germs and bacteria work their way in and it takes forever to heal. Took about 6 weeks for my cuticle to retake.

Get it checked out.

How did you do it, just out of interest?

The missus accidentally swung the door on it ! :D Needless to say she's kissing butt right now.

Go to hospital / doctors. They may decide to take it off and let it grow back if it's that bad.

Good luck.

My two big toenails each have a long thin crack from base to tip from when I dropped an encyclopedia on them when I was 3... That's like 16 years ago now :0

And someone else I know has a big toenail that grows strangely, falls off, regrows etc.

Might be worth seeing a doctor :P
