Shaver advice - what model?

My old Philips 5850 is pretty much knackered. I need something to replace it. I'm looking to spend no more than about £75, although I'll spend more if it's outstanding.

I'd prefer a short charge time, as I'm used to the convenience of it, but I'll buy a model with an 8 hour charge time if there's a good enough reason.

One that can be washed would be good - I could do without cleaning it with a little brush.

Foil or rotary?

Does the blade material make a huge difference, or is it just marketing? "DiamondLike Carbon (DLC)" sounds like a marketing thing to me.

I've been pleased with my current shaver and it has lasted well, so I'm thinking about another Philips, probably the 7180, but I'm open to suggestions.

No, not that kind of suggestion :)

EDIT: I'm not interested in a proper shave, with a razor. I'll do that for the sake of doing it, a pampering ritual, not for everyday shaving. I'm specifically after advice on buying a shaver.

I have tried many electric shavers over the years, both foil and rotary and without exception every oneof them has been a waste of space

Same.

I always wet shave.

I have one of these new 5 blade razers and i can honestly say its as smooth as well something really really smooth, its really nice as well as it doesnt sting like mad after shaving, used an electric shaver once and then i went straight to wet shave and havnt looked back =)

If you do start wet shaving and get razor burn still after all the gels, foams and oils - try King of Shaves Kinexium. It's about the only thing I can use without burn. Expect 4.99 for a small bottle but it will last for some time.

Not that any of this helps your dry purchase!

I just use a beard trimmer nowadays, but I used to use a Philishave electric jobby. It could be used wet, and dispensed shaving gel onto your face. Always gave me a comfortable, clean shave.

This man speaks the truth, very good stuff. Bit hard to wash off though being oil :)

I recently bought the Philips 7180 you mentioned, and am very pleased with it. Sure, a wet-shave makes for a close shave but its time consuming, and I nearly always end up not having any foam when I need it! Very pleased with the Philips - shaver burn was a bit of an issue at the start but it's less troublesome now after a few weeks of use. I also use Gillette post-shave balm which has helped a lot. VERY convenient to use, just rinse under a hot tap when done.

Braun Braun Braun Braun Braun Braun Braun repeat til fade.

I've had Braun for 33 years and everytime I've tried another make they've been awful.
Quoted for truth.

Hmm...5 replies I explicitly said I didn't want and which are useless to me, 3 manufacturer endorsements, two product range endorsements and 1 post that actually answers one of the questions I asked - feedback on a specific model.

Not bad for the net, I suppose.

No, but I agree on that saving oil. It's excellent for wet shaving. You can use that with a Bic and still get a decent shave.

Although Real Men use WD40 instead :)

I use the Braun Contour 5895 which I bought from Boots around 6 months ago for £65.

It is the best electric razer that I have ever used. It has a relatively short charge time, notifies you when it needs cleaning and comes supplied with a cleaning dock.

The cleaning dock is basically where you put the razer to charge and clean.

You stand it in the dock and the dock will clean the razer for you. Can be a little noisy whilst it cleans the razer but it does a good job and smells not too bad either :)

I would highly recommend this razer to anyone of my friends. So, another vote for Braun here.

My understanding is that when you wet shave you build up a lot of scar tissue on your skin. If you dry shave after having previously tried wet shaving then you will get a terrible shave for a long time and it will be quite painful. If you stick at dry shaving for a couple of months, shaving every day, then it becomes so much quicker than messing about with a wet razor.

I bought this razor today as I went into Boots and found it was selling for £55. The cleaning dock thing seems pretty nifty - as saint said you just stick it into the cleaning dock and it cleans it with a solvent. I'm going to go use it in half an hour so will report back on how it feels!
