Alan Shearer has been charged by Uefa's disciplinary committee for allegedly elbowing Inter Milan's Fabio Cannavaro during their Champions League clash.

Shearer was captured by television cameras swinging an elbow at the Italian international defender, but escaped any censure by the referee.

The blow appeared to catch Cannavaro on the back of the head.

A Uefa spokesman said: "Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated against Alan Shearer on the basis of video evidence.

"A decision will be made on the case by Uefa's control and disciplinary commission On Friday afternoon."

Newcastle, who lost the game 4-1, had had Craig Bellamy sent off before the incident for tangling with Marco Materazzi.

I bet he wished the FA were dealing with this. He'd get away scott free just like he did after leaving imprints of his studs on someone a few years back.

IMHO he deserves to get banned. He's a seasoned professional and should know better. Especially as they were already down to 10 men.

Good, he deserves a ban for it. & they can take action because there was no action in the game & the ref clearly cannot have seen it properly.

As much as I like Super Al, if you elbow someone in the head you deserve to get punished. There is no doubt he was provoked, but he's been around the block enough to know the score and what will happen.

What a joke, the ref saw the incident, how can Uefa possibly impose any further punishment?

because rightly or wrongly the sort of player that does this does nothing for the game in my opinion, they seem to think that doing it on a pitch is different than doing it on the street, they are sportsmen and should behave like so

its nothing short of assault and for serious offences liek this that could potentially injure someone beyond repair they should be punished in court, sod the FA and the UEFA boards, charge them with assault and watch this sort of behaviour slowly disappear ;)

He's now been given a two match ban.

He will now miss Newcastle's game against Barcelona in the Nou Camp on 10 December and the trip to Bayer Leverkusen on 18 February.

Shearer stated that their player was holding me and he would not let me go - I had to try to get away

Shearer has until 2300 GMT on Monday to lodge an appeal.

good, glad to see justice was done. it was terrible, and like others have said before hes got away with it before in the past plenty.

Well I'm glad to see someone, somewhere has had the bottle to take action against this player. He has got away with niggling and dirty play for several years. It's rather sad really that he has stooped to this level as he was a very good player in his hey day and even now can still strike fear into the opposition defence (although I sometimes wonder if it is his footballing ability they fear!).

cannavoro looked like he was about to apply a bear hug on him thats why shearer swung at him, shearer had been provoked

LOL

& as a proffessional football player & captain of a team already missing striker number 2 & in a very tough CL group, do you:

a) Raise your arms in protest alerting the ref to the rough treatment & get a penalty?

b) Elbow the git as hard as you can & then leap to the side as if you were thrown hoping to blag it?

c) Accept it is part of the game & just play it to your advantage?

d) Turn around & french kiss him to teach him & his team to keep their distance :p?

Surely it would be a?

So was Cantona just before he kung fu'd the spectator, doesn't make it right to retaliate.
