Bad for the old fella to bow out like this really

Would link to the story but theres nothing on SSN website but its just
benn annouced on the ticker at the bottom

Cruciate medial damage apparently

Inevitable really , saw him on tv on thursday on crutches , hardly likely even he would be fit to take any further part in the season or his testimonial on May 11.
Its a bit of a shame but his last goal will be remembered fondly.
The great man said this earlier this week:
The Lion of Gosforth said:
"I will be bitterly disappointed if it is the end because there are three huge games left for us.

"We are sitting in seventh place now, which might get us into Europe and after what has been a tough season that would be a great achievement for everyone.

"I wanted to go the full distance, yes, but if I have to finish, then it's not a bad way to finish, coming to your local enemies and scoring a goal that has helped us get a 4-1 win.

"To be fair, the Sunderland lad just fell on top of me, He fell on the outside of my knee and that puts pressure on the inside, and something has given in there.

"The knee is very sore and to be honest, it is not looking good at the moment."

Theres a tribute at the Gallowgate end of St James for him now , this pic doesnt really do it justice , its huge!

There is a light that never goes out.

206 and gone ... for now.
283 premier league goals , an interesting FACT.
An even more interesting FACT is that Sunderland have scored 210 premier league goals.

Theres a great piece here by Henry Winter Local Hero

The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
Our leader, our hero, our icon, our inspiration.
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Best English striker since Lineker I reckon (maybe on a par in a way) and a hell of a professional to go with it.
Shame there are few of his kind around nowadays but he's left us with some good memories:)

The best goalscorer the Premiership has seen. I'm sure he'll be given a fantastic send off by all the geordies. Vandle - I'm loving the Morissey lyrics, very appropriate. :)

First piece of confirmation.

When routine bites hard,
And ambitions are low,
And resentment rides high,
But emotions won't grow,
And we're changing our ways,
Taking different roads.

Then love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

What a legend.. i feel a bit upset about it all.. as he is the first legend in my memory for the club.. but amazing.

am thinking of getting a shirt with shearer 206 on the back... just for personal appreciation.

hopw to see him back in the future to win plenty competitions as a manager, at any club not just newcastle

If its medial ligament I wouldn't have thought he'd be able to. He'll be there I have no doubt, but I can't see him coming on.

Which is a shame. He deserves the send off of the toonarmy.

Shearer announces end of career

Last Updated: Saturday, 22 April 2006, 00:10 GMT 01:10 UK

Im sure he will be at the last game and will have a massive ovation, I'm sure the Chelsea fans will gladdy cheer for Shearer, they will have won the Premiership and I think that will make Shearer feel abit better.

The thing I loved about Shearer was he gave the defenders somthing to defend, he was somthing you would hear about in the 70s and 80s of players diving in and elbowing players, Shearer would always give a cheeky push or jump. Atleast he never dived like Rooney or Drogba etc. Shearer would make players tackle him with or without the ball.

He got a lot of slack of Man U fans for being a thug, He was never a thug and never did anything like what Keane did Alg ing.

Hehe , the end of Beardsleys career was difficult , as was the sales of Sir Les , Gasgoine and Waddle.
Never has one player ever personified the heart and soul of the Geordie nation in the way that Alan Shearer has.
He is one of us and that is what makes him so special.

If our fair and noble city was ever under attack from the hordes of the badlands from the south , he would be given the generals duty.
An army with him in the lead would be unbeatable (a football team wouldnt , unfortunately).

Im hijacking this thread , to bore and entertain ocuk'ers until the day im banned. (or they give me a Shearer avatar)
My earlier coments on the lion

The man is peerless and without equal on Tyneside.
We are priveliged to have seen such a warrior undertake our just and riteous cause.

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism's of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

I'm not a Newcastle fan (or even a genuine footy fan as far as clubs go), but Shearer is one of our all time greats. I'll really miss the bloke tbh - already missed internationally. No headlines, no scandals, no glam girlfriend - just a 100% footballer.

Wonder how long before he's involved in the coaching setup at Newcastle.

He confirmed on MOTD that he wont be coaching next season, He will be spending a lot of time with his family and enjoying the money hes earned in his career.

Rooney loves a dive, hes been watching Ronaldo too much.

You talk some real tosh sometimes. Comparing Shearer whose career spanned 18+ years to someone who is just starting their career. Calling Rooney a diver is pathetic, Ronaldo..yes, but Rooney.....hahahahaha
