sooooo girlfriend got a call from uni, and there is now a place for her. Starts in erm.. a week and half.. bit short notice to quit jobs and move.. but we're off.

looking on rightmove.co.uk on what kind of places we can afford to live in. (circa £500 pcm), plenty of modern city centre 1 or 2 bed appartments that look good. not looking for 'student' accomodation, not interested in halls or house shares etc.

i've never been to sheffield, i don't know it all. what areas should we avoid, where should we not avoid, and why?

also, anyone gimme a job?

Sheffield is a pretty big place. Where will she be living?

edit: NVM.. so I guess you want to live together.

Better question.. which uni?

For jobs, make a post on www.sheffieldforum.co.uk

As for areas, what kinda places you been looking at?

ta.

areas, all i've done is put in 2 bedroom apartments near the city centre that are 400-500 PCM. But i know round where i live at the moment, there are some nice looking places but they are in bad areas of town. which are the bad bits of sheffield to avoid? been told to stay away from the tram lines as they shake buildings.

We've not decieded where we are living yet.. thats the problem!

Uni is sheffield hallam. but don't care about being right next to it, want a nice place in an alright area.

Norton is nice and Crookes (a little hilly). But a lot of places are mostly populated by students.

You can rent in the city centre at a reasonable price but as you would expect a lot of the city's surrounding areas are a little 'run-down' (some aren't).

All I remember (used to have a boyfriend who lived there) was that Manor Top was pretty bad. THink that's a way out of town, though!

He lived just off the A61 Chesterfield Road near an area called Woodseats. Wasn't spectacular but wasn't too bad either - depends on what you want from a 'nice' area...

Also I had relatives with small children who lived near there, on Archer Road near a big Sainsbury's, that wasn't too bad either if a bit of a busy road.

Yep, definitely avoid Manor Top. Woodseats is an ok place to live, lots of local things such as shops and only a brief bit from town centre, not an overly 'nice' area though from what I've seen.

Broomhill, Crookes, Ecclesall Road area are all decent areas to live.

are these districts officially named, and can be found on a map so that i can check what area a property is in?

If your girlfriend is going to sheffield hallam i'd personally say avoid crookes. Its where the majority of sheffield uni students live and is a fair mission from hallam uni.

You want to be in/near the city centre. Eccleshall road is an ideal place to live, its where most 2nd and 3rd year students live after coming out of halls. Easy bus routes direct to the uni and close enough to walk after a night out.

You could look at apartments right in the city centre, such as West One apartments. They're more residential apartments rather than student accomodation.

Avoid places such as Broomhall due to gang culture.

she is actually going to be studying at the collegiate campus (have i spelt that right?) again, i don't know which part of Sheffield that is in.

thanks for the help so far people :)

Yep. Collegiate campus is right off of Eccleshall road. It's a good place to live, theres a restaurants, bars, a kfc, subway, sandwich shops and also a tesco all in the space of a 5-10 minute walk depending on where you live on eccy road (which is quite long!).

Anywhere around there would be ideal for you, obviously you have eccy road, all the off roads from there, right up to hunters bar which would also be ideal as it will have slightly less students up there.

edit: like I said though, do avoid broomhall. I lived there first year, and unless you enjoy walking through large gangs of somalians trying to rob you, it's not ideal.

If you're talking Collegiate Crescent, then that's Ecclesall Road or Broomhill [not BroomhAll, as pointed out above - though it's very convenient :D].

If you want somewhere a bit quieter [less studenty?] then you could go out along Ecclesall Road to Hunter's Bar, Banner Cross, or Fulwood.

Grandad lives at woodseats :) i used to live at wadsley bridge before i moved down derby way.

id reccomend to the OP to go live up hillsborough 15 min drive into the country then ;) also there are some good pubs in the area like the castle and park hotel.

That's near me :D (Grenoside)

And yes Hillsborough is a quite good area, a very good distance between town centre and the country.

I wouldn't say that Hillsborough's particularly handy for a student, mind - especially one who'll be going to Collegiate, as it's not on a tram route. It's pretty much the opposite side of the city.

I'm not knocking it, as I lived there for six years [next to the Wednesday ground] and enjoyed it for the reason you mentioned. I just think there are other places in Sheff that provide equal living but superior convenience, that's all.

Plus, it's likely that GeX's missus will strike up friendships while studying; fellow students are more likely to be in the areas closer to the campus. Handier for the social side of uni life.

I live in Meersbrook/Norton Lees which is 5mins from the city centre and in my opinion a very nice place. There's a mix of appartments, terraces semis and detatchs so there'll be somewhere to suit I'm sure. Popular with students (and by this i mean proper digs) is Crookes and Broomhill and Eccleshall Road so if you'd like to be around other students go look round there.
I'd avoid the Wicker, the Manor, Shire Green, Parsons Cross, Jordanthorpe (the list goes on..)
Good Luck!!

Around S3 theres lots of new apartments, I'm a student and live in some of them rather than 'student flats' I currently pay £525PCM for a 2 bedroomed apartment and area seems nice enough.

If you want close to where she's based, Hunters Bar and Broomhill. Greystones is nice and is on the bus route, as is Ecclesall itself (not to be confused with Ecclesall Road)

Fulwood and Nether Green are nice and also on the bus route, A bit expensive though. Sharrow's not too far away - walkable but isn't very nice.

My sister works at the colleagate campus.
