sheffield - where to live, where not to live

thanks for all the feedback people. Am going to short list some places tonight, then hopefully get some viewings booked for the weekend.

Around S3 theres lots of new apartments, I'm a student and live in some of them rather than 'student flats' I currently pay £525PCM for a 2 bedroomed apartment and area seems nice enough.

can i ask what extras are on top of that, council tax, water, electric etc? just trying to get a rough idea of cost of living.

I went to Shef Uni. I'd recommend Hunter's bar or anywhere else around Eccy RD. Pretty reasonable prices as well

Crookes, Broomhill S10 etc are all much closer to Uni than Hallam. If if they are close enough (e.g Manchester RD area), she'll be pretty far away from coursemates etc. They are also generally more expensive in my experience.

Hillsborough is far too far away from the Unis, especially Hallam

Careful of post code areas. S11, for example, includes Hunters Bar, Ecclesall, Greystones, and bits of Sharrow. It's mostly nice but not all of it. Same with S10 etc. Find out the specific district name and I'll comment. Lived in Sheffield all my life.

I wouldn't say that Hillsborough's particularly handy for a student, mind - especially one who'll be going to Collegiate, as it's not on a tram route. It's pretty much the opposite side of the city.

I'm not knocking it, as I lived there for six years [next to the Wednesday ground] and enjoyed it for the reason you mentioned. I just think there are other places in Sheff that provide equal living but superior convenience, that's all.

Plus, it's likely that GeX's missus will strike up friendships while studying; fellow students are more likely to be in the areas closer to the campus. Handier for the social side of uni life.

hillsborough aint to bad area but if your not on tram route wouldnt bother tho... what road you lived on near wednesday ground?

sorted a place, S1. Just off west street. Only 1 bedroom, came in slightly under budget but has underground parking. Gone on a 6month contract, then once we know the area and have more time to look we can look at other places, possibly further out from the centre.

Looked at one place on Queen Mary road, middle of the new developments. It was huge, and cheaper. BUT it was close to the park, and the otherside of the park didn't look too nice (Manor?) and it put approx 3miles away from the centre.

avoid Manor at all times :p

aye, had seen it mentioned a few times and it had stuck in my mind. real shame because the new bit is lovely.. but wouldn't want the missus walking through the rest of it to the tram / bus routes to get into town.

I remember some years ago West Street used to be the red light area. Not sure if it is anymore though. Anyhow good luck with your move,,.

Not been the red light area for some time. It's really cleaned up in recent years. You do get the usual drunken students etc round there every night though. You only have to walk half a mile north east though, ironically just past West Bar police station...

I'm in Ecclesall, Ecclesall Road runs from here to the City Centre, anywhere close to the road is good enough (all the way down to the City Centre)
