Sheffield

Does anyone know why areas such as Rotherham near Sheffield are the way they are? I understand that it's got something to do with industry being there for a while and then disappearing? I'm probably oversimplifying this :D

Demise of heavy industry. Mostly steel making, but also coal mining and lots of other manufacturing. Mainly down to globalisation- being undercut by other countries. Not helped by antagonism between unions and government, an over-reliance on monetarist thinking (in particular by the Thatcher government), poor management and lack of investment.

Relatively well paid unionised jobs were often replaced by low skilled, transient work.

Sheffield has undergone somewhat of a renaissance since the worst times, but is still well behind many rival cities such as Leeds and Manchester, never mind London.
