Shell Cards

Shell do have their "Drivers Club" and if you're good enough (:p) you can get upgraded to the "V-Power Club" both of which are free of charge.

I'm a relatively high mileage user so have actually got a decent amount of points which I convert to Airmiles.

All the Shell garages i visit have the standard card machine on the counter and most of the time my Debit or Credit card never leaves my hands.

Given the card machines are so small its hard to fit a skimmer without being easy to spot.

There is no need to fit a skimmer, there's much easier exploits that involve the computer in the back office. Your pin wont protect you either, it will just protect the bank from having to pay out. "You must've let someone see your PIN".

Of course people have successfully fitted skimmers to Shell chip+pin terminals in the past.

Think about it, garages tend to employ young kids who work a horrible shift unsupervised for long hours and crap money, it's easy to get them to let you tamper with the kit either by offering money or threats. Some of the people they employ are probably dodgy anyway and do the tampering themselves, or go for that job specifically to tamper with the credit card machines.

Because it isn't zero risk? Read your T&Cs some time.

You're not covered for transactions where your PIN was used (and it's dead easy to clone a card with a different PIN on it as the PIN is not checked centrally), while you're at it read the T&Cs for Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure, you are not covered for any transaction where your password was used, so if you get hit by a keylogger the bank will not pay out.

It's a good job that there is still a silly exploit that lets you order from COMPETITOR while bypassing Verified by Visa otherwise one of my major sources of cheap computer hardware would be gone as I do not agree to the T&Cs. I'm sure OcUK would be happy for the extra business though :)

You are using phrases such as "You're not covered".
This is not actually true at all.
I personally know two people who were told initially by their banks that their card & PIN had been used to make purchases they didn't.
A single phone call to the bank and a fradulent transaction was logged and both of these people had the money back in their accounts within days.

The idea that all banks were suddenly going to "not pay back" any transaction that was verified with a PIN or an online transaction using "Verified By...." was the usual rubbish circulated by scare mongers.
These same people who were against Chip & Pin even though in every single country it has been introduced in, credit card fraud has fallen.

You are responsible for keeping your password and username secret. You must not write down, store (whether encrypted or otherwise) on your computer or mobile phone handset or let anyone else know your password or username, and the fact that they are for use with this service.
Unless you are a victim of fraud, you are responsible for all instructions sent using your password.

The onus is now for you to prove it was fraud. If you can't then you are responsible for the transaction. With a signature transaction it's easy to prove fraud as the signatures wont match and lets face it retailers never checked them anyway, with an electronic transaction where the only evidence of PIN use is a single boolean "Verified by PIN" field in a database (what? you think the pin got sent with the transaction?, bwahahaha that would be far too sensible) it's a lot harder.. computer says not fraud.

Sure it cuts down on the casual, swipe someones card and use it to buy a case of lager and top up your mobile phone type of fraud which makes up the bulk of credit card crime, but for organised serious fraud it's now a hell of a lot easier.

Of course the organised gangs arent out robbing hundreds of cards every night and buying hundreds of mobile phone top ups so of course the numbers of card related crimes that happen are falling, but if you get hit then chances are you will get hit hard.

It's most definitely not zero risk.

I've got a Shell Citibank credit card, well my old man got one and I got the second card (wouldn't accept me, being a student and that...;))

Worth noting that the cashback only applies if it is over £1 per litre, first time I used it the other day it was 100.9 for diesel in Yarm.

I also signed up to the Drivers Club at the MPH Show this year, nice spanish looking lady was telling me about it. Asked where we were from - "London?" - "*blank look at my mates* ... no, the north east..." haha

The drivers club seems absolutely pointless unless you are filling up at least twice a week imo. I fill up with around £50 of diesel each week and I would get a voucher for £2.50 off a tank after about 4 or 5 months of fillin up at shell each week...wouldn't be too bad but I don't usually fill up at shell that often as it's a bit out of the way (although I am doing whilst I get the 6% cashback, that and its 7ppl cheaper than Thirsk!)

I get like...a £10 petrol voucher a quarter with my VPower card, pretty poor rewards really, but better than a kick in the face when you're going to be filling up at Shell regardless

^^ thats how i see it, loads of shell stations on my normal routes and i need super so getting a few quid back in free fuel is better than a kick in the privates.

Err, no it doesnt. Its 3% regardless, at 100ppl that happens to be 3p.

V-Power club card looks better than the standard one with your name printed on it!:D

Going to save my points up and get a Ferrari Jacket I think! Got £35 in B&Q vouchers since summer though :)

Dont use much V-Power as I dont really use my car and for work the van just sees normal Shell diesel unless they have none/the pump doesnt have it.

Eh? No it doesn't! It's 3% regardless of the pump price

Anybody that fills up at Shell and doesn't have one of these cards is stupid if you ask me.

So I use my debit card for everything, so if the dodgy guy in my garage decides to rob some money from the debit card account, I won't get it back? It will be gone for good? Surely your bank pays it back?

I got upgraded to the V-Power club when I stopped filling up with V-Power. I guess they want to encourage it over buying normal fuel.

Well they will, eventually, but if your current account gets raided it's a hell of a lot more inconvenient than if somebody clones a credit card and spends money that isn't yours ;)

You're throwing money away by paying for things with a debit card, you should be using a cashback credit card!

I normally put a tank in once a month or so, but normal is 88p and v-power is 115p at the minute, so ill stick with normal for now.

I have a Citibank Shell CC, use at Shell, has got me about £100 back over the year on Shell purchases. Also get 1% on everything else. Also have a V-power card which I have had for many years now.

V-power is 95.9p in WMids yesterday :-)
