Because okay it maynot make your car quicker but the cost is ofset with better MPG and the assurance that it contains cleaners etc.

i used to get better mpg from optimax in my scirocco which actually said to use 98 RON on the petrol cap and why would I not agree with the manufacturers? My Jap car is mapped for 100 RON. I have to MAKE DO with optimax.

Yes, despite the fact that my car has been specifically mapped for Optimax, I like to run it on Morrisons finest 95ron rat's pee.

I like the mettalic tinkly noise my engine makes on said pee, and it also makes the knock level indicator on my Power FC make nice patterns on the display

You do realise that for certain types of engine it does actually help?

Yes, but only if the car is mapped for it or has an ECU that will advance the ignition on higher octane fuel

And tbh none of them do that really, they simply retard the ignition if they detect lower grade fuels.

What is the bit about regrading it though? Agreed, those that say it is all rubbish, makes no difference what you use etc are either driving boggo cars that wouldn't know what to do with decent fuel it is slapped them in the face or high power euro spec cars that have been designed/restricted to run on guff petrol and basically have no clue . I am on my third Impreza, a rebored and modified import STI5 2.2 running about 375bhp and I use Optimax and Millers octane booster ALWAYS.

After all the recentish hoohaa about Tesco 99RON fuel being amazing I swapped over to it for a month-6 weeks still combined with Octane booster. To start with the car 'seemed' to be pulling better, but this died down and then she started to perform noticeably worse, rougher idle, knock knock knock etc etc. I gave it a good long go (6-7 tanks or so) and then went running back to Optimax. Smooth as silk again still pulling like a train. Almost 5 years of using it and I won't be going elsewhere again any time soon for my fuel.

My other 2 scoobs were also run on the same juice mix and were both ultra reliable. Only once did I have to put non-optimax in as an emergency and that was not a nice experience. For people with turbocharged high power Jap imports, such as Imprezas, Skylines and Evo's, decent fuel means the difference between years of good reliable service and bits of your engine being left down the road behind you. Having only a 140 mile range on one tank means that I do have to plan ahead somewhat as to where the Shell stations are lol, arse.

my Honda CBR600 runs better on Optimax
it has full SS micron race system/K&N and ignition advancer
but even without the advancer it ran better

exactly, those of us who have machines worthy of it will notice a difference (or find it essential). Everyone else can continue to beleave it makes no difference, fine by me!

If like my car it's in the manual to use 98 ron if possible then it must make some difference even if it is just that the engine is mapped for it.

if your can can vary the timing sufficiently then it can actually make a difference.
