Shell Optimax to change it's name

The fuel is based on the Optimax formula, but is now 99RON, not 98.

Any idea why we aren't getting the full 100RON like the rest of Europe have?

I can only guess that its something to do with cost??

Theres the BP fuel (not ultimate) thats supposed to be 102 or something and they are asking c£2.40 odd per litre.

Our local Shell only has two Optimax pumps and I believe its up to the garage itself whether to change to V Power or stay with Optimax.

Probably because we don't 'need' it. You only see the real high RON/MON levels in countries where the ambient temps are much higher... The cost to produce compared to the need and benefit is small in the UK

I hear we've actually been supplied V-Power for the last couple of months (under the guise of Optimax), they're just going live with the branding now.

Quite possible, just logged into my account:

Total V-Power litres purchased 432

So i'm already in the V-Power club.. makes me feel all warm inside ;)

"Some older vehicles may find slight deterioration of certain metals, rubbers and plastics in the fuel system when using bioethanol-petrol blends. However, overseas experience shows this risk to be minor. If a vehicle is more than 10 years old or is not in good condition, a mechanic may need to inspect the vehicle. This includes checking for water in the fuel tank (and, if necessary, cleaning out the tank and fuel lines) and checking the condition of fuel hoses and seals." excerpt from http://www.transport.govt.nz/biofuels-440/

So I take it that Optimax doesn't use bioethanol then? What about the new V-power stuff?

Where did that come from then? its a UK bike isnt it? it might be made by the Japanese but its made for the European market and i am pretty sure the documentation will tell you to run on 95 minimum, the only people i know who run Optimax on bikes for any real reason are the racers, with timing changes and altered fuel profiles ;)

I have tried it on all of my bikes from Jap to Italian and its never made any difference, in fact the track bike that i picked up today (GSXR750) has been doing 53's round Brands Indy and never used anything other than 95 ;)

Im sure in the book it reccomends the use of 98, but says 95 is ok? In any case my power commander will be properly mapped very shortly on V power.

I don't think thats right (at least not with garages I work in) because I've been told that the tanks need to be drained of optimax before the new stuff goes in, but then we told by another person from another department in Shell to just go ahead with changing all the signs on the forecourt and pumps because its the same fuel just a different name. Different stories from different people!!

When I filled up today, the pump had V-Power all over it, but the cashier said that next time I filled up I'd get new V-Power and that it was 99 Octane, so I said 'Oh, so you're still selling Optimax at the moment then?' and she replied 'Yes, for a few more days'.

Make of that what you want...
