Sherlock

Not impressed in our house. The thatcher smashing crime got figured out in about ten minutes and then it was silly conspiracy thriller nonsense.

Aye, not as well written as before, which is a shame as he took time off from Dr Who to concentrate on three whole episodes of Sherlock.
The main issue that remains with me, is the misplaced casting, in no way would I ever see Jane or Mary or whatever as a superspy.
Mycroft was a step behind rather than in front for the duration, and clearly it'll link back to M in some fashion, but hopefully much better or wittier than I am currently thinking.

Mary/Jane is more a "wetwork" operative than spy - atleast how portrayed in that episode.

Wasn't really that impressed - like above figured out the purpose of the busts almost immediately (not really hard when its a mechanism used in other detective stories including Sherlock) and everything else felt contrived in the way it was pulled together. It felt like they were trying to appeal to several different types of audience and not really succeeding for any of them IMO.

It's a shame really that it has come to this. It was alright but nowhere near as great as the first couple of seasons. I much preferred the crime at the beginning and litte clues and lots not making sense and he puts them all together. Hopefully this was an opening gambit and the next episodes are better.

Aye true wetwork, but even then, not in 1 million years would she be the trained hardened killer I'd hand an SMG to and tell her to go rescue some hostages.
Just doesn't make sense, rather like the rest of the contrived mess.
John's affair, setup purely for a guilt pang when Mary snuffs it.
John's affair which happened all within one episode, or rather might have happened, or might have been developing, and involved two scenes to build background.

Just seems poor.

It's hard to do big arc stuff when you get three episodes every year or so. By the time something bubbles back up you've long since forgotten about it. They need to do isolated stories that stand on their own.

Ditching Mary also smacked of clearing out someone who was inconvenient to the plot, like it was a hassle having her hanging on.

I just didn't buy John's affair at all - just seemed entirely out of character - indeed it would have needed far more building up to seem even remotely plausible.

I swiched channel halfway through. Didn't get on with it at all.

Seems I missed some drama but tbh I agree it seems they've lost the plot a bit. None of the characters seem right, it almost feels like a comedy or parody of Sherlock Holmes. It's just a mess now.

IIRC weren't the last couple of seasons a bit like this? bit of a messy Christmas/New Year episode then a couple of better episodes to follow?

Yeah in all honesty it's not been that good since Moriarty exited the show. Last night's episode was messy and convoluted. I think the problem is that they have said that this might well be the final series, so they have quite a lot to do to tie things up in a satisfying way. Also, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington recently split up, so maybe that's got something to do with killing off her character.

I too wish that they would go back to the original format of a seemingly impossible case per episode with hints towards the story arc.

I said exactly the same to my house mate, it just wasn't a strong episode but he thought it was great and has set up the next 2 so we shall see but it didn't keep me gripped anywhere near as much as usual.

Horrible episode. I wasn't even paying attention by the end. BBC really cannot keep dropping the ball like this with these flagship shows. Need to stop relying on the same old writers.

Just want to go back and watch the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes greatness now and forget all about this new one.

Kind of sucks they shot the bolt so early with the secretary - could easily have got 3 episodes worth out of that alone as an overall arc while having specific cases central to the episodes.

Did half wonder if they were faking Mary's death - but there is no way it would have got past someone with medical skills like Watson's.

Hopefully it has closed off some stupid choices of material. (i.e Mary superspy)

Lets hope its back down to individual story per episode.

I ended up stopping after 25 mins and deleting it off my TiVo. What have they done to it? I prefer Elementary now.
