Sounds similar to mine,12hr shifts,0700-1900 and 1900-0700,shift pattern covers a 12 week period,love the time off !!.

I spent 15 years doing 7.30-7.30 nights, Mon-Thurs, great at first, it got harder over the years though! Quite often I did 6 nights with overtime.Didn't sleep much and my eating habits were all over the place.
I once had a job doing split shifts, with a few hours off in the middle of the day. 6AM-midday, then back in at 6PM-midnight. That was a killer.

I've been working nights (11pm-7am) for the past 18 months and I absolutely detest it. Whenever I have days off I can't adjust and still end up staying awake until 4-5am in the morning, it really is horrible, plus I always have that horrible feeling when setting off for work that everyone else has already finished for the day and instead of relaxing or going to sleep I'm off to work.

Yeah but then you can grin knowing they are about to start their morning and you're done for the day :p

Yep mines 7 till 7 as well, great shift for long holidays as well as one shift a month is only 4 days, had 3 months in cornwall since easter not including the 5 day breaks, could never go back to 9 to 5

6-2pm Awful shift. I am not a morning person.
2-10pm OK. Actually sleep for more then 3-4 hours.

Also worked perma back shift which was 3-11pm, and perma nights which was 11-7am.

I hate mornings. Who ever likes being up at the crack of dawn is the spawn of satan. I like nights. More money, less work and no managment.

I work 6:20 til 15:20 with the possibility of 1 hr OT a day. Then lates are 16:10 til 01:30 with 1hr OT a possibility :/

Weekly rotation.

Coming up to 26 years of shift work.

Earlies are 0700-1500 (sometimes 1700), Lates are mainly 1400-0000 and nights are 2200-0700 hrs.

I normally get 6 to 7 hours sleep - any longer and I feel groggy.

Mealwise, earlies get up have Porridge or Muesli, go to work, have sandwiches, fruit, yoghurt around noon or 1pm. Have main meal when I get home around 6pm. Go to bed around 10pm.

Lates - get up around 8.30 ish, breakfast something light like Cornflakes Orange juice. Have something fairly light around midday and whislt in work sandwiches etc again around 7pm or 8pm. Just go to bed when I get home.

Nights - sleep until around 3pm then have breakfast :) main meal around 6pm and around 1 or 2am in the morning sandwiches fruit etc. On finishing the shift go to bed.

Drink plenty of water, fruit and vegetables - I never eat fast food on nights or lates even though the temptation is there - you do not want to be eating fatty foods with tons of salt, healthy food is the way to go, since working full shifts will put strain on your body.

Keep up some basic exercise as well if you can.

Normal household routines - quick stuff gets done on work days. Stuff that takes longer on days off. Beauty is the pattern I work rotates through the week so I reguarly get days off in the week rather than the weekend - rather nice to go shopping / places when everyone else is at work 9-5ing :)

I did three 3pm - 11pm shifts and two 11pm - 7am shifts in my old job. Really mucked me up, now I work 7am until whenever I finished, which at earliest is 3, latest is about 7pm.

Much prefer it this way, get to spend more time with family & friends.

Working nights in network operations... those that struggle to sleep during the day: Earplugs, blindfold and nightnurse are your friends!

I work shifts so an early is 7-3 and a late 13-21hrs An early for me suits me great as I eat normal times and have late afternoon evenings to do the normal routine.
Late shifts however are awful I find I cant settle in a morning and forget to eat properly and feel I come home and go more or less straight to bed!
So my question is:-
Do you work shifts, and wheat tends to be your routine for them?
Do you like them?
How do you fit your normal household routines around them?
Also how long have you done shift work?

you said nursing so you will get a break in that 13-21hrs shift of 30mins you can have your tea then or do what I do have a snack and a meal when I come home

Breaks? are regularly not had due to patients needing things as you are about to go and being so short staffed no one can cover what you are doing. :)

I used to work 7-3, 3 - 11 and nights of 7 - 11.

I found when on lates I would eat occasionally, when on nights, I simply wouldn't eat that day as I never got time. The killer is when you're doing a 3-11 then back in at 7am the next day :( .

Being a lone worker, breaks were not possible.

I now work nights constantly and hardly eat at all. Never get time for breaks either (lone worker most of the time).

Isn't there a law/unwritten rule that you have to have at least 11 hour between shifts? I'm sure it was like that when I did shift work.

(I could be wrong on this)

Yeah, there is. But a lot of the laws do not apply to Hospitality or Retail. I left that place anyway :)

I work offshore. I work 1 week of nights: 18:30---06:30, then swing over and do 1 week of days: 06:30---18:30. I then have 3 weeks off to recover.
When I am working nights I eat dinner at 18:00, then we break for another meal at 00:00 (1.5hrs) Breakfast after nights I skip.
When on days I eat breakfast at 05:30, lunch at 12:00(1 hour) and I skip dinner and have a chocolate bar in my cabin with a cuppa.

I've worked shifts for 26 years now and I'm used to it. Being offshore is easier as I don't have to drive to work, cook my meals, wash my laundry or the pots :D
