Hey guys, so I'm moving to Australia fairly soon and I'd like to take my PC over there. I was wondering if any of you could suggest a company and what price you reckon is reasonable. Thanks.

I'm not really taking much else other than clothing and a few personal things with me as part of my luggage allowance. I've looked into it a little more and found two companies that would do it for between £270-340 based on the quotes, measurements I gave them. I think this is a reasonable price? but I'm not totally sure. Also a little cautious because I don't know about these companies.

Why don't you just pack your components and take them with you? then you could buy a new case over there.

I did a bit of weighing up the prices between buying another similar/slightly upgraded computer over there rather than shipping this one but it didn't seem worth it.

My current specs are mostly the same as in my sig - MSI GD65 G3, i5 2500k, 8gb Mushkin Blackline, 1TB Spinpoint F3, TX 650, Cubitek HPTX Tank but with 2 670's

The case is fairly big but I'm quite fond of it, but you're right, it might work out better to pack the components seperately and buy a new case. That way I might get it in my luggage - Not so sure about the monitor though :P

My original plan was to ship the Monitor and PC as it is with the graphics cards removed.

Hardly seems worth it for around £300, it's not a particularly fast computer.
If it were me, I'd sell it and take the money and spend it on enjoying Australia, you'll spend less time inside with a country that beautiful, however not my choice. Secondly could you not buy a new suitcase, pay the extra luggage fee of about £40 and pack everything in bubblewrap.

If you were taking a container-full, then you could just put it in with the rest of your stuff. As you're travelling light, just take the HDDs and get a new PC in Oz. Better would be to copy everything to a SSD and take that as a SSD is lighter and smaller.

Assuming you have the original packaging then you could re-box it and send it via UPS / Fed Ex / whoever. Just be prepared for it to take a month or three if you choose surface shipping. And stuff the innards with newspaper or similar to prevent movement.

Do check to see if import taxes will be payable.

Computer hardware prices in Oz are stupidly expensive tho iirc. I would dismantle and pack as much as possible into your luggage and then just suck it up and buy the rest over there.

Can't you speak with the airline and see if you can pay a bit more to have it put in the hold when you fly? I flew to Russia with BA and had to take a huge and very expensive baritone saxophone along with me. It only had a soft case so i was pretty worried about it going in the hold as it could potentially be crushed but they let me take it on as hand luggage! Took up an entire overhead locker on its own and they didn't charge me any extra. :)

If you're a gamer bear in mind that Australia has some funky censorship laws so most of the games in your Steam library will be probably banned. Don't let them find out or you'll be up the dunny. :D

I shipped a large box back from Sydney when I was there. It cost about £40 and took nearly three months to arrive. The box was a bit battered, so whatever you do I suggest bubble-wrap the hell out of it.

In your case, I would genuinely be considering spending a bit more to have it shipped faster and by air.

It would make far more sense though, to strip the PC down and sell it on MM and rebuild a new one when you're there. Or do as others suggest and strip it, and repurchase a case there.

I used to take mine as separate components in my luggage when I used to spend my summers in NZ. Just bought a new case over there. Never bothered taking the monitor, just got a second hand one over there.

Components are really expensive in NZ/Oz.

With the way the currency markets changes it depends when you are buying. Currently for instance I can get an i5 4460 for $269 from a retail shop in Adelaide, which equates to £128.70. Whereas, OC are selling the same CPU for £152.98.

Just so you know not a one off a Samsung 250GB SSD I can buy locally for $145 or £69.30, which will cost you £82.99 from OC.

So, with the way the exchange rate is at the moment, you might be better off selling and buying here.

Agreed. If you're not shipping a lot other than just clothing (is this a short term thing, because that raises other questions), sell up and buy new in Aus or just leave it there till you come back.
