Looking for a proper shock-proof external hard drive (2.5") for offsite back ups. Google search reveals adat, transcend and pqi drives. Dont know anything about any of these brands. Any good?
I have a Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile 320gb, the silcon covered one. Very sturdy and rugged, meeting us milatry drop test standard. Been great and no problems and it gets bashed about a bit in my bag, cannot fault it.
I know this would be an expensive option but if the data if really important and a single drop could kill it then how about a SSD they have no moving parts. However they will deteriorate over time with lots of writing and deleting but im guessing speed is not an issue and its more how much physical force it could take.
Custom PC did a short review of the Hitachi Simpletough 500gb in May's edition and I think this sums it up :
"To put the Hitachi through it's paces, we drove over it with a car, threw it down five flights of stairs, ran it through a dishwasher and threw it out of a window. The fact that we were able to then start out preformance test speaks for itself"
OK yeah. Hitachi looks good but I need to attach it to back of my main PC using a longish double ended USB lead (need to use both on my computer for these USB powered drives to work) so the in built lead wont work. Id need a double ended usb lead with a female socket on one end. Sounds like hassle.
Hi, Ultim. Yeah SSD would be overkill here for my needs.
Transcend looks good enough for the job and has a regular fitting so think Ill go for that. It'll only be getting transported once a month from offsite to on and then back again so doesnt have to be dead heavy duty.
