My Celica needs some new front brake pads before the MOT so I have been looking at replacements, initially I was looking at upgrading the pads but then I saw the prices.

Front Brake Pad Standard Type £42.89

TRD High-Performance Brake Pad Front - Fast Road - Black £128.08

EBC Yellow Stuff Front Brake Pads £104.56

The standard brakes are well up to the job (4 pot at the front and 2 pot at the rear) so these prices surprise me.

Is this a recent thing as I am sure there wasn't this much discrepancy.

Edit found standrd ones for VAT inclusive. £ 38.62

Is the standard an OEM part or blueprint?

You're always going to pay a premium for uprated pads - goes without saying.

I've found Yellow Stuffs for yours for £94.11 on MSW

Blueprint I guess as they are labeled OEM, I was expecting a premium for performance but 3-4x the cost, just took me back a little.

Go look at the price of some of the Pagid stuff for 4 pots, made me want to cry.

Red stuff come in at £80 for me, which i find acceptable, yellows are around £90 irrc.

Luckily the Pagid stuff isnt available for me.:D

Greenstuff are £78-22, getting more acceptable.

£169 for the Blues / £189 for the Blacks / £203 for the Yellows.

Haha that is ridiculous, makes me feel slightly better.

Just cant justify spending 4 times as much on pads on a car that does 4k a year, the pads will probably outlast me. :D

The pads i'm looking at for mine are similarly priced to what Firestar quoted - just for the fronts.

If I ever finish rebuilding these bleeding calipers that is.

The Carbotech XP-8 pads I've got on my VR-4 cost me £100.

Now - I'll be looking at around £150 to replace them.

I'm not looking forward to that! However - the braking performance is now astonishing compared to the standard setup - and well worth it for the level of performance my car provides.

i wonder if those "OEM" parts are actually what toyota use or some gyppo brand

youd have to be mad to put gyppo branded parts on your car

What's the price difference between, say Linglongs and top of the range Mitchelins/Goodyears? Or the difference between standard dampers and high end Bilstein ones? Performance parts are always a lot more expensive, this shouldn't be a surprise.

Whilst the standard pads are no doubt adequate for normal use, I bet they would fade pretty quickly if used hard, e.g. on a track.

I don't understand, surely that is a factor in their favour? If this is the last set you are going to buy then it's not a massive, ongoing expense. If you are going through two sets a year it might be different.

They are sold on Fensport so I am sure that they will be Blueprint parts, I could always ask toyota how much the pads would be for a laugh. :D

I only paid twice as much for Goodyear F1 Asymmetric over crappy budget stuff so I was expecting a similar difference.

I agree, but as my car has never and will probably never see a race track then this doesn't matter

I see your point and I am still debating which ones to get.:)
