Shockwave traffic jam recreated for first time

This does indeed annoy the **** out of me on my commute home

Stupid *******s who drive to close and then use their brakes for small adjustments of speed. ****ING USE ENGINE BRAKING FFS!!

:o

I remember studying queue theory whilst at Uni, that included some of the maths behind traffic jams. As already said, all you really need is for people to be a little more observant and forward planning. If people learned to have slightly more breaking distance and thus drop their need to hit the brakes so much, smooth driving on the roads would be a lot easier.

Thats not really new. But im sure someone got a huge big grant just to tell us what we already know. - got to love them researchers.

There's too much common sense in this post, please can you remove some?

Thanks

;)

True, but this effect happens on roads that are at, or near, maximum capacity. The problem then is that if you leave a decent gap in front of your car, some spas will think they're going to beat the queue by pulling into your gap, thereby removing the gap and forcing you to brake or hit the muppet.

People need to learn to not only leave a decent distance, but to remain in their lane, and not switch lanes into non existant gaps.

Definately. Money would be better spent educating people on this than "Speed Kills". Probably cut a lot of accidents too (granted smalls shunts).

When i worked for Peter Brett Associates i saw computer models of this kind of jam... Maybe this is the first live re-creation.... But it has been modelled a number of times I am sure!!

Now how do you stop it?

I have a suggestion on that.
The key aspect is people wandering around lanes, often with no regard for the mess they make of braking distances.
So how about using the existing speed cameras to spot for people tailgating too much. When I say too much, I mean that people are only penalised if they've spotted say more than 3 times in a day. That caters for people who've been cut up at just the wrong time.
The hardware's already available to do this, just seems that we need the will to make it happen.

No... the real solution is to drive so close to the person in front there is no gap for someone to jump into. Of course to help support this new driving policy, speed limits will have to be abolished and you should be pulled over if you don't have another car stuck to your front bumper.

Nope... can't see any problem with that alternative solution... :p

The roads would flow a lot better if people kept a sensible distance from the car in front and didnt slam on their brakes all the time for minor adjustments in speed.... just ease off....

In the real world, however, I agree with MadFruit... if you leave a gap 6 inches longer than the car in the other lane, they'll jump into it at the first hint of their lane slowing down... braking distance decreases to none and YOU are the one who has to slow down...

Madness!

You're kidding, right? You drive a car, you should know!
lol

jams like this on motorways annoy me.
you don't really need to brake on the motorway. if you keep a good distance, you should be able to slow down enough by just taking your foot off the accelerator.

it's people driving too close and braking every five seconds that causes this crap

also when someone sees a car braking a mile up ahead and starts braking too

Totaly off topic :)
But how long ago did you work for PBA and which office? I only ask as the company i work for deals with there support?
They use some very cool programs
