I'm looking into getting myself a Shoei lid and have managed to find decent prices on the Hornet DS and XR1100 (older models I know).
Priorities for me are safety rating (obviously) and comfort (mainly wind noise).

What are people's experiences of peaked lids? Personally I think they look the dogs danglers but any thoughts on safety/comfort affects (can't find any sharp ratings for them)?
Any thoughts on either of the above models?

I'm currently using a Caberg Duke and it just feels a bit cheap/flimsy and is bloody noisy at motorway speeds.

I have the Shoei Neotec, used to have a Caberg. I thought the Caberg was good before I got the Shoei, but they're not on the same level. The build quality, noise, comfort, etc is just much better. Caberg are decent for the money, but if you're ready for an upgrade Shoei is a great choice.

I have the XR1100 and it was noisy stock, but you can easily sort that with the whisper kit and neck curtain (they give you a neck curtain). Some say it's as quiet as a Schubert with the whisper kit.

Can wear it all day long :)

The hornet will be great for commuting but they aren't the best for longer fast speeds. Depends on what you want to do with it really.

Ditto, I done the same to my XR1100. I find it quieter on naked bikes than faired. Think the air stream coming off the top of the screen creates a lot of wind noise and buffeting.

Had mine 3 years and the chin strap has started to fray, so I replaced it with the NXR. If they still sold the XR1100 I would've bought another.

Sounding like the XR1100 will be the way to go. Whisper kit seems like a very good idea for the price!
Lid will be used for commuting and also for longer trips. Motorway use will be sat at 70-80 so not too high speeds as I'm not sure I could afford the points given London insurance premiums.

What's the NXR like compared, and does the XR1100 whisper kit fit? I'll eventually need a new helmet, so wouldn't mind staying with Shoei as I know they fit and are comfortable for me.

Arrived today and I'm very pleased! It just feels like a premium product, super light, super comfy, better fit than my Caberg and a bonus that it actually has gaps specifically for an intercom. Fitting my Interphone to the Caberg was a pain in the arse but it's great in the Shoei!
Very impressed. Cheers for the advice all.

It's a slightly different shape to the XR (shorter), the whisper strip doesn't fit and the visor is different too.

Comparison, NXR is slightly lighter, more compact shell, it feels snugger, but then again the lining on my XR will be worn in. I prefer the visor lock in mechanism on the NXR but I don't think it will last as long as the XR's.

Noise wise it's about the same as is the ventilation. But it's not been hot enough yet to see how really good it is. The XR ventilation I found to be superb, with all six vents open on a baking hot sweaty day, the air flow running along the top of my head really helped cool down.

My major gripe with the XR is how long it's lasted, especially as you can't replace the chin strap. I've had Shoei's since 1988 and they've all been 6-8 years old before replacing, 3 years for the XR is poor in comparison.

So the NXR is a nice upgrade from the XR1100 and it's typical Shoei quality, will report back after my trip to Italy in September to see how good it really is.

Helmet City have some ridiculous prices on them at the moment and plenty of sizes.

I bought the XR1100 Transmission in Blue with a whisper kit for £290 and it comes with a free pair of Hornee Kevlar Jeans (I've only recently bought a pair of Hood K7s so 1 pair will be going on eBay which should get me £80 back at least.

That's a stonking deal!

I already have a Shoei Qwest with the same visors. I'm supremely tempted to get one. Must. Resist.

What are the free kevlar jeans like?

Jeans look good but no pads. They're not as good as the Hood K7 jeans I have already and look to be a more casual/baggy fit. I'll be putting them on eBay at some point but if I didn't already have a pair I'd be using them.

"NO OTHER KEVLAR LINED JEAN OFFERS THIS MUCH PROTECTION"

I take it they can get away with this due to other much more well protected jeans such as the Hood styles use their own aramid blend rather than trademarked Kevlar?

certainoy less 'kevlar' in there than my Hood jeans but it seems to be well placed. The joys of marketing bumf!

Edit: if anyone wants them drop me a trust message. I'm sure I could knock 30% off online prices...

I much prefer my Hood combats to my other kevlar jeans, it's nice knowing that I've basically got a full pair of kevlar trousers on.

Although if I'd spotted this deal before I'd bought my Shark lid last week I'd have probably ended up going for it.
