Just seen this on the news.

An ex-police office has approached a nursery/pre-school in Thailand, opened fire [edit: "The gunman was armed with a shotgun, a pistol and a knife, according to Thailand's public broadcaster."] killing his wife and children as well as bystanders. Killed "at least" 34 people (including 23 children).

He then ran off and shot himself.

Edit - updated details provide a much more accurate account than the initial reports:
The gunman had been to a court hearing on a drugs charge before he launched his attack, a police spokesperson told reporters.

The former officer was discharged from the police force last year for drug use.

Police are giving more details about what happened.

The gunman became agitated after arriving at the nursery to find his child was not there, officers say.

He subsequently opened fire on and crashed his vehicle into a crowd of bystanders, before returning home and killing his wife and child, police spokesman Paisan Luesomboon said.

This is absolutely horrendous! Literally just dropped my littles ones at school and pre-school this morning - I couldn't imagine that type of thing happening here, madness. Those poor kids, their poor parents, how sad.

I wonder if all Thai police are armed, and this guy kept his service pistol maybe?

I'm so thankful for the strict gun laws in this country.

Stories like this and the liverpool girl Olivia, just makes me feel so so sad/ill. As a parent of children of similar ages (under 10), it's the one thing that I find impossible to "switch off" from my thoughts.

I agree re gun laws here - whilst a crazy person will do crazy things even without a gun, fortunately they are rare, but when they happen, the devastation and harrowing emptiness left behind by their actions are hard to stomach.

Could happen here as much, its not like I have ever heard of mass shooting in Thailand.
A quick Google suggests 1 in 10 Thai people have guns (statistically speaking)... which means they're a lot more prevalent there than here, so I don't think it is as likely.

But why kill kids? :( I just don't get it... I mean if you're deranged of course it doesn't register... but kids... Perhaps my perception is skewed as a parent... it just really hits you hard.

Exactly. Somewhere along the way this policeman became abnormal.* Perhaps this may lead to changes to gun licensing in Thailand linked to mental health checks (?).

* edit: oh... "Panya Khamrab was dismissed from the police force over drugs offences last year, police say"

just doesn't make sense, any killing is for the most part utterly pointless but killing kids, that's just another level.
Think its saying he killed his wife and kids..wife leaving him..if I cant have my own kid no one else can have theres mental gymnastics.

Ditto. I have a constant low-level feeling of dread that something terrible could happen to my wife and little one. I'm sure it's not healthy, and it's far from rational, especially as I don't have the same concern for my welfare, but maybe that's just part of being a parent.

Yep. I get killing his wife and kid(s),* but why all the others?

*I actually don't understand it at all, but if you've reached the point where murdering your family and committing suicide is the only solution to whatever mess you're in, there's probably some twisted logic to it (in his head). I still can't see how that expands out to ~30 other people.

Did this always happen in history or does media now aid mentals/physchos go out in a blaze of glory?

Not blaming media. Asking if this is a logic to be ‘remembered’ or make an impact by nutters?

Or have nutters always nuttered?

I don't think it's healthy but my very agéd parents tell me they still worry about me and think of me. Despite being thousands of miles away. I guess it's the burden of parenthood?

I think @potatolord is right about causing suffering but if you take your own life afterwards then why would you care if people suffered. You don't because you've left this plane of existence.... However I guess it guys you infamy for a while.

I hope this causes behavioural changes to gun laws in Thailand. That's about the only "good" that can come of this.

I think the majority do have to much claim to fame, many physiological peeps have said they should be blocked identities in the media, just refer them as "person X" no names no family interviews, no photos of them etc, no follow up till sentencing.

This guy those seems to have honestly mentally snapped though.
