Hi All,

I just got a 28mm F2.8 lens for my alpha 350 and have a noob question. How do I create a wide angle shot? Is it using the Aperture or something?

I think you might have your terminology mixed up.

A wide angle lens would generally be something that's 24mm or wider on a full frame (35mm) sensor, the 28mm on your camera is equivilent to 42mm.

You create a wide angle shot by using a wide angle lens, unless you mean a panorama which is taken by stitching multiple images together.

Aperture controls the amount of light let into the camera, as well as the depth of field.

I'm new to lenses and have only been using the kit lens up until now. This lens has been billed as a wide-angle lens which is why I asked. Its very good up close though.

Well, it isn't a wide angle I'm afraid (not on your camera anyway, due to the crop factor).

Your kit lens, assuming it's the 18-55 is wider.

Oh god... Pleas ask here for advice next time!

Basically, small number = wide angle

large number = telephoto

If your kit lens is an 18-55, then 18 is the 'wide' end and 55 is the 'telephoto' end, which will make things bigger.

If you want to see more in your pictures you need to go wider than 18mm. Technically, the lens you bought is a wide angle, its just not as wide as your kit lens:)

Something like this will do the trick and be a big difference to your existing setup

The lens will have been described as wide because it would be relatively wide on a full-frame DSLR or a film camera. You're kit lens is likely to be 18-55mm so you'll be able to get a wide angle shot with that when used correctly.

For extreme perspective you'll need something in the 10-16mm range (e.g. Sigma 10-20mm).
