hi, is there some where one might find a fairly short modem cable that is electricaly insulated? from moving somehtig in the modem cupboard it seems that the plug extesnion is spitting out enough em interference to cause a bit of a drop in the adsl line sync speed.

this has got me thinking that a short and isolated cable might be a good idea to try but i cant seem to find. all the cables i see and the typical super thin phone cables. does such a thing exist? would it actually help ir should i just keep the exitsing cable away from things?

The RJ11 connector doesn't have any shielding options so a shield would act like an antenna.

If the cabling is that poor you may find a bit of distance and a twisted pair cable would help. The trouble is that modem leads are usually never twisted pair and go with flat due to their short length so unless you can find something you'll have to make one up yourself. I made a 20m twisted pair rj11 to rj11 lead a couple of years ago which really helped but in the end I just put the router closer to the master and instead used the twisted pair for voice.

You may find that introducing ferrites to the other cabling may help take the edge off.

I very much doubt that a simple 4-way extension cable is able to generate any RF interference unless it's arching badly, at which point you'd notice the heat, the sound and the smell. Are you sure it's the extension as opposed to something plugged into it, like a cheap power adapter?

ive no idea what exactly was causing, i would suspect though its the powerline adapter thats plugged in there. (you know the data over your electrical wiring things) the other two things plugged in there is a freezer and a black sky modem/router.

With such a limited number of candidates finding the culprit shouldn't be a problem. Switching the freezer off for 15 minutes would do no harm, especially if you don't open it. Bypassing the Powerline connection shouldn't be problem either.

however im not sure it really matter whats causing it, neither the freezer nor powerline adapter can be moved any more than a handful of inches.

they all in the cupboard where the bt master socket comes in. so none can really go anywhere.

You may find that neither of them is at fault.

You have some very simple diagnostic steps that you can take to help to find the cause of your problem. Half an hour of your time and zero cost.

Once you know what the problem is you can look at solutions.

Not sure if I can post the link, might be considered a competitor but searching for High Speed RJ11 DSL Cable, should give you a result to a reasonable quality cable.

When you say "a bit of a drop in the adsl line sync speed" how much are we talking about?

As suggested it should be easy to turn the freezer and homeplugs off temporarily - if they are causing interference you should see the reported noise margin increase and decrease as you turn them off and on again. (routerstats is a nice tool for logging/plotting sync speeds and noise margins).

the drop was just under 1mbit. given i was only getting just under 6.5 it was enough to matter.

is the Powerline plugged in to an extension lead? Or directly in to the wall socket as they don't like running on extension leads.

extension. i wosnt sure it would work when i bought them but it does. there is no hardwired plug point in there.

(master bt socket is in cupboard, hate horrible sky router and i like to have most stuff cabled up so powerline plugs take interent connection from there to the livingroom where it gos inte router there.
