Would seem to me that encryption is utterly pointless if you're then going to back up to a cloud storage provider, unencrypted.

Yeah - I use it but don't pay any attention to what it does as its just arranging family stuff heh and posting silly pictures at Christmas.

Not used WhatsApp so I don't know... are the backups mandatory or can you disable that function?

not particularly, it just means that theUS govt/law enforcement might be able to get a court order to look at the backup(and perhaps UK,Can,Aus etc..). Anyone else who might have wanted to snoop on you is still pretty much screwed unless they can break into your google drive.

As you well Know Dowie.
At no point have I questioned if Whats App offers End To End Encryption.

I have stated that a System that Enforced a plain text version of all messages be available to a third party is not End to End Encryption.
You and others have disputed that fact, I'd like to see you stand by those statements professionally.
