Shorting PSU?

I thought my PSU had died last night, during instilation somethign happend and sparks (never a good sign i know) came out of the PSU.

I unpacked it all and put it away to return (only 24 hours old).

However when i pluged my old PC in it wouldnt power, so i thought AH! the fuse in the cable went.

Tried the PSU from outside the case and voila worked fine.

So i fitted it back in the case, antec p180, but when i turn it on it fizzes for a few seconds then settles down.

Is there a chance the the fixing screws could be shorting it or something?

Or should i just return it to OCUK?

Hi There,

It very much sounds like there is some type of short in that psu, If I was you I would just RMA it and dont try 2 use it anymore, as if you do it could be quit shocking :eek:

Save yourself and your rig, RMA it back 2 ocuk.

OK haver fitted a new PSU and it still makes the same noice. i need to try it on a different extension see if it is that that is causing the problem.

The motherboard could be shorting aswell, or anything connected to it.

Try taking the rig apart and rebuilding it, quite a common thing to happen and its the quickest solution to try.

I will look at doing that when im a bit calmer.

Though must admit the ammount of times now i have put the power cables throught the slots in the P180 im getting quite good at it.

What are the main things i should be checking?

I can thing that the motherboard seating would be a big factor.

I just take them apart, down to removing the motherboard risers and restart from the bottom up.

Rebuilding is quicker than finding a short, also check the motherboard's rear IO panel is on ok, as that can be a easy short for a case if a tab is in the USB ports.

Those tabs are a pain in the arse, can i remove them with no detriment to the system?

No idea, but all of my rigs have most of them removed.

I think you may be right, normaly i have a pair of powered creative speakers in the back jack, but this morning i jsut powered up with some headphones in. No crackling no sparking so it looks like the short is comming from there.
