I don't gamble. Well, not strictly true. I throw around twenty quid a month away on the national uk lottery.

I really dislike that bookmakers are allowed to advertise. It seems somehow unethical to my mind. Tempting folks to gamble online. Making it so easy to let folk get in to financial trouble. Making out that it's light hearted fun thing to do. Bookmakers say in thier adverts "gamble responsibly".*** if you feel a word should be partially starred out then you should fully star it out. You've been a member here for well over ten years, you should know this already ***, they want you to give them ALL your money.

Should adertising gambling be banned?

It's extremely unethical, but then booze ads are perfectly legal and that stuff's destroyed a lot more than gambling.

I do love the "safe gambling week" or whatever it is, when the bookies are all forced to promote safer gambling which is literally the exact opposite of what they want, it must burn their souls to have to do it :D

Yes I think so.

There aren't many other ways to lose so much money so quickly as gambling.

At least with alcohol it generally has to go on a long time before it gets really bad.

Online gambling you could lose your house pretty quickly

Ironically it was banned until the lottery came along. My vague recollection is that the bookies kicked off that it was unfair that the lottery was being actively promoted when the rest of the gambling industry was so heavily restricted in how it could advertise itself. Since then it’s been a slow process of gradually normalising gambling as a form of entertainment.

Shouldn’t be legal as it can be crippling to some, as i also think alcohol ones should be banned too.

I was in asda recently and they for some reason had a woman on the end of the alcohol aisle giving out samples of something. She offered some to a gent who politely declined and directly told her he was a recovering alcoholic to which she replied “oh go on are you sure you don’t want some” poor guy walked off with his head hanging all because she wanted to get a sale.

Difficult one tbh. Does a lot of harm but to maintain fair competition different bookies should be able to advertise.
Probably less harm than booze buts that's allowed so meh.
One of those ones where sensible grown ups shouldn't have a problem but unfortunately people can't be sensible.

If no ads are allowed how would it be unfair for them?

Honestly if somehow it meant online casinos killed off physical gambling then all we'd need to do then is IP block the online casinos, problem solved.

It'd be nice seeing it banned just so football clubs would have to go back to having normal sponsors and not leagues half full of weird Chinese crypto gambling sites.

I agree with others that it should be banned. It's the new version of Cigarette or Cigar adverts. Harmful to wallet more than health, unless you can't afford to eat due to it.

Should all addictive products be banned from ads? Some people are addicted to eating etc. I think people can get addicted to all sorts of things. But I do draw the line at gambling and probably alcohol.

You don't understand addiction do you
What is there to understand ? Person with addictive personality decides to do something that is known to be addictive, person gets addicted, then other persons enable that person by telling them it's not their fault they chose to do addictive things so that person doesn't really make any effort to not be addicted, why would they ? it's not their fault, totally out of their control

Yeah you really don't understand addiction.

Whilst they may have capacity to make a decision and the right to make as many poor decisions as they want addiction overrules logic beyond what they can control which can often spiral completely out of control. Therefore there is no choice to be made as the urges of addiction won't allow for anything other than getting that hit. Even just asking for help with this can become crippling/debilitating.
