Lol. He broke the law. Simple as.

Should we let people off with certain crimes then?

[Edit] Oh I see. It's not about right or wrong. It's just another long winded anti-US crusade.

Some people really are pathetic.

It's not as if he invaded some foreign state to steal their oil, is it? He just exposed the American Government IT security geeks as incompetent idiots.

That's not exactly what he did though. He illegally accessed a lot of very secret information, 70 years is a bit harsh but unfortunately he needs to go to jail

Also, quite confused at why the mother is so irate about her son going through 8 years of terror, why don't they just take him over to the US and get it over with .. ? He's done the crime, he needs to be trialed to see if he deserves jail :/ They've brought everything on themselves yet they're still complaining that they're the victim. Unbelievable

It's not as simple as a yes or no answer for me.

No he shouldn't but he should stand trial here and, if found guilty, do a sensible sentence. The trouble with America post 9/11 is massive overreaction to things like this. Go after the real targets not soft targets.

Nobody is saying he shouldn't be tried, but he should be tried here. We have, or had, a policy of not extraditing our citizens to regimes where they could face unfair treatment or excessively harsh penalties. That should apply in this case too. The British government should remember its sworn oath is to serve the British people, not the American people.

If he has gone through 8 years just to get to this point then thats by his own choice. He could have accepted extradition to the US, had his right to a speed trial and just got on with his life from inside jail.

He commited the crime and so should be punished for it, and although I have mixed feelings as to who should have the right to try the case, I think only the US realy know thoe important of their network, know what its capable of and know the problems that this has caused more than any UK court would.

As for his medical condition, I have no sympathy for him, as he was of sound mind to commit the crime, and if his situation is deteriorating thats only because they prolong what is happening.

Nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to do it. He broke into US government computers. Did he honestly think that America would just brush it under the carpet and ignore it?

He knew the risks but went ahead anyway. I hope the US throw the damn book at him.

He just doesn't want to be extradited because the UK is s soft touch with it's criminals and he knows he'd get an easier ride here.

Extraditing someone with his mental issues is essentially giving him the death sentence, there is no provision to give him any form of help once he's on US soil. The US have even told the UK that we'll have to pay for any medical staff on the plane on the flight over!

Until we have an equal extradition policy with the USA we should freeze all transfers, it's far too one sided with them needing next to no proof to get hold of our citizens.

So we should let him off because he has Aspergers?

Because I think that's utterly retarded.

No, because we would most likely let him off because he's a "poor, tortured soul".

We might let him off a custodial sentence on the grounds he didn't do any real harm, and he had no INTENT to do any harm at all - it isn't like he hacked in to sell secrets to the Russians.

In fact the Yanks should be employing him, to help sort out their evidently lacking IT security.

Why should he be tried here? That's a bit of a weird suggestion considering that we have nothing to do with it really
