Should I attempt to upgrade my WD Red's Firmware.

I bought a 6TB Red, back in November 2015, and have been happily had it chugging away in an Openmedivault server.

It was originally running in an x86 system, but I have just it moved it to an Odroid HC2.

Purely by luck, I came across a few webpages that suggest that the firmware on some Reds need to be updated to extend their longevity (something about Intellipark being too aggressive).

Is there any way I can tell whether I need to apply this fix?

CrystalDiskInfo should tell you which firmware is installed, or if you download the firmware update it should tell you before applying the update.

Nothing wrong with doing the update. Just make sure everything on the drive is backed up.

The firmware version doesn't appear to be available in Device Manager.

However Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics does report this information for the drive - it can be downloaded from the WD support site https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3&lang=en
