Should I avoid HyperMemory and TurboCache?

I'm looking for a 256MB entry level PCI-E card for a basic, non-gaming PC.

I'm assuming it's a bad thing to have a card which steals system memory? It's not obvious which cards have this feature!

Help me lads... £30-£40 price range please :p

Not a problem, if system has enough memory in the first place. Used onboard Nvidia for a HTPC, no problems. I think set it to 32MB or 64MB.

Although if you're buying a seperate PCI-E might as well get videocard with dedicated, 64MB will be plenty although probably 128MB is the minimum you can buy now.

I'd get the lowest priced non Hyper-memory/Turbo-cache card I could find. Little point in getting anything better than on-board video, if your card is going to steal system RAM, IMO.

Maybe a fiver over your budget but theres a X700pro with 128 onboard ram in clearence for 45quid.

Edit: Not that I want to take a sale away from OCUK but if you look around there is a X300 with 128mb onboard for 25quid which is in stock.

The cheapest one that OcUK still sells new that I know of is the Asus EN7300GS and that comes in at ~£45. :)

You might be able to pick up a fairly decent card from the 6800 series or X800series secondhand for around your budget though.
I wouldn't even go that far!

non gaming PC?
x300?
why 256Mb Vmem if you're not going to use it!

Personally, nor would I but then it isn't my choice here that matters. For ordinary office-style usage integrated graphics is perfectly fine. :)

the reason that the biggest graphics chip manufacturer in the world is intel :p

If the system has 1GB of RAM even with Vista there wont be a problem using a hyper-memory or turbo-cache card. Failing that a cheap x300 128MB would be the next stop.

256MB video is recommended for Windows Vista Aero tbh.
Not sure about that. My friend's system with Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB + 512mb system ram was struggling in Aero interface but after upgraded to 2 GB, it is lightening fast! He was joking about windows popping up before even lifting your finger off mouse button!

So 128mb is more than enough.
