Security is pretty much always a trade-off with convenience so in this case you'd be just as well stay in the protected admin account if it is going to drive you bonkers.
Alternatively, you could just make all the changes as protected administrator then log back into your standard account.
Ok I'm having a bit of a nightmare mode. I created a second account which i made administrator and changed my usual account ('Toby') to Standard user.
As it was proving too annoying doing anything in C:\Program Files (x86) I changed my usual account ('toby') back to administrator and deleted the second account i had created.
However, i'm STILL being denied access to C:\Program Files (x86) and getting to contact the administrator.
Games are a special case and screw with the whole administrator vs standard user thing anyway.
For one there's plenty of older or badly written games out there that require administrator privileges to even run, and they do like to write files to their install directory rather than to the user's profile directory like a well behaved app would.
I just install my games to D:\Games rather than C:\Program Files, which gets around most of this.
